Hey has anyone found a site where it lists what equipment a band or artist uses? There should be a site listing right?

Some bands post the gear they use. Others don't. Take a look in the album booklet even. The new Three Days Grace CD actually lists the gear they use, to an extent. I think it just said what brands they use. An old Cold CD i had did that too. There's probably quite a few albums that list that sort of thing.

Try GuitarGeek.com. They're the guys that Guitar World uses at the back of each issue where they give the loadout for popular guitarists. So at least its updated once per month, but not much more than that. A lot of the info there is pretty old too. But its a great starting point.

im pretty sure meshugga's newy is Pod or has Pod tracks.
I know they use EZdrummer for triggers.

apart from that, it could totally crush you knowing the gear these guys use and have access to.

Its never one make of amp or guitar, youve got mic pre amps for example worth in the 10's of thousands.

having said that, you can get preeeettty friggin close i reckon with gear at home, provided youre prepared to throw a little coin at it and learn learn learn.

now i think of it alot of bands have used Pod in albums

I think the real popular case was Lenny Kravitz using amp farm exclusively to track guitars many years back, i think it was one of the first instances of a mainstream artist using nothing but a plug for their guitar tone.

I also remember seeing a "making of" of Thrice's Vheisshu (sp?) album where Teppei talks about how they tracked live for a day, then realized they were getting killer tone with amp farm and just abandoning the live tracking for their heavy guitars.

ha ha ha, well, if it sounds better then why not eh?
I do agree with some people saying though that its not quite the same as the real thing. amp sims dont have quite the exact same feel as the real thing but that's just it, its not the same.

I havent tried it yet but i wanted to mix the amp sim and real amp together and see how it sounds.

Unless your getting youre amp up to vols required for a good sound you may as well use amp sims.

speaker excursion, hard driving valves and speaker box noise are all contributors to that cool sound. but it has to be up loud to get it.

these things are all i notice that amp sims dont have.

Hmm, wow really? Suprising. But ya i mean, if it sounds good who cares. I've been wondering if a few bands use pod farm on the albums. Especially several that use line 6 amps live. I'm pretty sure evanescence does, and there's always been a sort of unique tone to their guitars. Kind of like... Something missing, but its actually cool that its missing and makes them feel a little more dark. Eh, just a hunch though.

But ya, i agree. There are definitely some differences. Threw my logic, something must be crazy hard about micing a heavy guitar amp (that or you just need a 10k mic pre). Because i own probably close to a dozen low budget albums produced 10, 15 years ago, and the guitars sound TERRIBLE. Pod farm just blows them away But maybe like you said, if you mix the real amp tone in with the Pod farm, maybe you'll get that "real" quality without sacrificing the bite of the plug.

I tend to do a little bit of everythig . when I record electric guitar, i have one track DI'd (to use with POD farm), one going into my PODxt (one line into the Tech 21 power engine amp) the other going direct, and I mic the amp. Or i've done, one DI (i always have a DI track) and a mic'ed amp (i used a Vox amp the last project i did). Then i decide what sounds better, some times all three are kep other times the modeled sounds are saved ,hell some of the time the band prefure the way they sound though the modeled gear and ditch the nic'ed amp track. I'll be honest i tend to use amps to get the preformance out of the guitar player more than anything. If you can get an awesome take and you have a DI'ed track than you're set to mix and match all the possibilities .

i can play some pretty freaking ordinary tracks in amongst the 4 i usually do, and as long as there's 2 goodies and no dropouts playing wise, it gets hidden, and i guess add's to the rawness.,

Its a tough one, going for perfection, or natural rawness.
once you start on the perfection road, everything under that sounds off.
too much rawness sounds messy.

I try to go for a mixture depending on where im at in a particular song.

very true Deon. It all depends on the sound / band i'm working with. When i'm recording or just putting something down, i tend to just go direct , that's just me because i'm used to using headphones to play (guitar is not my primary instument). I say what ever sounds good for the material and gets the best proformance from the person playing is what you want to go for. I like to experiment andplus i'm a gear junky.
