A quickie cover tune, first recording of my Martin D-41

This is slapped together so quickly that it doesn't really do justice to this magnificent instrument. I pressed my home studio's "record" button for the first time in probably 16 months to capture this so it felt nice.

It's the intro from Tesla's "Love Song" by memory. I don't think I have it all correct but it's been a decade since I've played the damn song so it's close enough!

Fingerstyle Martin D-41 --> MXL 993 --> Yamaha MG 10/2 --> M-Audio Delta44 --> Reaper Trial Edition

My actual recording computer is broken down, so this is on the family computer in the study, where the acoustics are pretty terrible. But I was just wanting to have some fun and hear what my prized posession sounds like even through my modest hobby project studio.

No effects other than the Classic Master Limiter and Reaper's noise gate and EQ (which, as you can tell, I haven't learned how to use properly).

Tad,

WOW! That sounds rich! Mr. Martin has surely done well by you! I've never heard that song before, but you surely have it down. That's some kick-butt fingerstylin'! Are there overdubs, or is that just one guitar? It's great!

16 months since you've pressed "record", huh? Looks like you got some catching up to do!

Why thanks fellas! it's been way too long since I've even had my equipment hooked up, much less made anything productive out of it. I hate listening to cover tunes from people's home studios (well, not always, but you know...) but I just wanted to hear my Martin played back to me. None of my friends are brave enough to touch it so I've never heard it other than from playing position!

There are 3 guitars, and now that I hear all 3 parts as steel-string, I'm starting to think that the 2 harmonies are nylon strings on the original.

I can't believe you've never heard Tesla's "Love Song"! You couldn't turn on the radio or MTV between 1992 and 1998 without hearing it.

If I get the gumption, I'll sit down and record a few more little acoustic covers as I experiment with mic placement and where to set up around the house. The acoustics in this study are horrendous. You can hear the room reverb all over that recording...its like it stacks up due to the multiple layers.

The 1990's were my country-folk-bluegrass period. I pretty much only listened to twang and banjos during that decade. I didn't even discover Nirvana until about five years ago. Also, I played guitar for an Irish Folk band, so it was all about the drinking songs and so forth (my "Hats Off to Beer" period!)

Can't wait to hear more from you and your Martin!

hmmm, I thought I left a post on this, I listened several times too it. :O I think it sounds great , real nice tone, playing ain't bad either. ;)

I've never heard the original either, but what radio I listened too in the 90's was Classic Rock, cool song though.

Thanks Tripps and OD!

I sat down last night to mess around with another acoustic number I used to play a lot back in high school. After I rehearse it a bit and fiddle around with some 2 mic setups in the awful acoustical space in my study/studio, I'll post it up.

I'm hoping that this gets me back into the swing of things as far as recording. I've got a bunch of money tied up in this home studio equipment (cheap as it might be, it still adds up!) and I feel terrible that I don't use it more often.

I forgot about all of the little details you have to deal with just to get something simple recorded. Get the guitar strings changed, get the guitar tuned, get the mic stands out, find a spot where 2 mic stands, a chair, a guitar, and myself will fit. Find a way to get the mixer and the mouse and the keyboard all within reach. Get the headphones out and find a way to not tangle the cords for the headphones, the mic, the mixer, the interface. Stop breathing so heavily because it's coming through on the acoustic guitar takes. Don't clear your throat in the middle of a take. No sniffles. Now that I can hear myself play, I forgot that in the intervening months I got lax with my technique. No finger squeaks, no stopping and starting. No tempo changes. Geez, its a wonder I get anything done!
