Doomed...

Weird question, but I'm curious if anyone else has attempted this.

Couple of years ago, picked up a copy of Doom: The Collector's Edition. Turns out, the thing was basically a marketing gimmick for Doom 3, which was about 2 months from release at the time.

This would all be well and good, but the executable (one of those god awful Windows 95/98 ports) barely ran at the time and doesn't run under Vista at all.

What this means is that I have the .wad files to run all of the doom games, but no executable. There are freeware ports and the like, but they're all bizarre adaptations of the Quake engine designed to run off of old Doom .wad files for graphics, music, etc.

Anyone know of a port that's basically a plain vanilla "as it was in DOS, so shall it be forever" so I can actually fire this beast up again?

"Mason Jar Czar" hahaha, funny.

I dunno about DOS games and stuff much, but with Windows XP they had a compatibility feature that would allow older programs to be played within it, and it worked pretty durn well, I run Vista myself, but am not sure if it has such a feature, poke around and see, maybe it does as well.

The compatibility feature isn't an issue in Vista - at least for this program (if the compat mode doesn't help, there's always DOSbox, which is a lovely program).

Apparently there's a .dll that hasn't been included in Windows since 95/98 that this program needs to run.

Beyond that, for some reason, mouse support wasn't included the last time I actually was able to get this beast to run.

In the best of all possible worlds, I'd find copies of the old DOS executables and just run them in DOSbox. I used a port called Vavoom a while back, but it was surprising just how much MORE limited the graphics of the game looked when someone tried to offer true 3d movement in-game.

Oh, and thanks for the kind words on the title. Apologies for being self-appointed, but my lobby was very underfunded and slipped through the cracks.

Someone has to make sure all of those little guys are arranged properly on shelves and sorted by size.

Have a look here

Incedently I've managed to get Quake 2 running confortably on my Nokia N97. Great stuff.
