Oct 05, 2009 05:18 pm Have a little patience my friend. WE all do this for free and many have daytime jobs or are involved in many other things. So have a bit of patience and you'll get your anser.
AS for Austin Winkler and the voice he has. SMoke for twenty years and abuse your vocal chords and you'll have that voice.
And yes, that is not an effect it is his real voice. And no, there is not any real way to get that via processing without it sounding like it is processed. You have to work at getting that gravel in your throat voice going. Some can do it with practice and others come by it naturally. He can as well sing smoothly without the gravel.
If all else fails you can try to blend a second vocal track in with a breaking up type distortion.

Oct 06, 2009 01:46 am i dont smoke, but from a smelling point of view i would suggest "Camel" man the reek, they gotta do some damage.
Oct 06, 2009 10:39 am Go with Marlboro. The good old fashioned cowboy killers won't let you down.
Funny thing is I have smoked for over ten years, and can't get even an ounce of rasp into my voice. I sound like an 8 year old girl singing. I think it's kind of ironic actually.
Maybe whiskey too. Go on the Atkins Diet... The Chet Atkins diet that is, whiskey and cigarettes, no food. You will look the part too :)

Oct 06, 2009 01:19 pm Smoking can take a long time to affect your vocal chords. Geoff Tate from Queensryche smoked a pack or two per day and still had that super operatic metal voice. Not sure how long he kept that up, but it goes to show that abusing your lungs and throat with cigarettes is no way to achieve a raspy voice.
Some people are born with it, some aren't. Tom Waits smoked and drank for many years, but his voice was already turning into the sonic assult weapon that we recognize pretty early in his life and career.
What you might be able to do is use something like a multiband compressor or something similar to split your vocal tracks into separate frequency bands. Then you can apply a distortion to the lower frequencies while leaving the upper frequencies untouched.
Or maybe try putting a graphic or parametric EQ in your signal chain and send that into a tube preamp or some other device that can generate distortion. Then crank the low frequencies on the EQ so that they are the only frequencies strong enough to drive the tube preamp into distortion. I do this with a guitar and a tube amplifier, not sure if it'll work the same for a voice into a tube preamplifier.

Oct 06, 2009 08:59 pm was jokin on the smokin, hey that ryhmes.
the only way to get the voice crackling from my point of view is usage.
it just aint gonna happen unless ya using it quite a bit.
you need to find that nice shelf where you are using it quite hard but not excessively hard. dont wanna do damage.
Oct 09, 2009 01:01 pm One thing I was told that Austin does is just scream and yell a lot. And then goes and sings. He normal voice was all messed up when I talked to him last month. (They are from the town I live in and we work them in occasion.)
