Anyone have one >480watts? I found an Antec Phantom 500 online...it looks like it fits my needs but it's out of production. I'd hate to find out the hard way why...maybe it ignites at a certain temp. or something?
Anyone using something in production that works ok? Four sticks of DDR2 and 4 hard drives combined with my e8400 eats up power pretty bad...my PSU, CPU and case fans are the only noisemakers on this computer. If I could get rid of them I wouldn't have any whirring bleed into my condensers when recording vox...
Easy to find fanless CPU solutions...not so for PSU's...

Aug 20, 2009 02:59 pm While I'm not so sure about fanless PSUs, I have seen a few "silent" PSUs. They still have fans, but they run much quieter than most power supplies. Let's see if I can dig up anything useful here...
...
Eh, I don't have time to do a proper search, but hopefully the term "silent PSU" will give you some Google fodder.

Aug 20, 2009 03:04 pm Also, you might be able to combine more than 1 PSU. Although its tough to come across a case that'll accomodate more than one. With a little MacGuyver-like ingenuity, you might be able to rig up a case to accept multiple silent or fanless PSUs. Run the CPU/board off of one, peripherials off the other.

Aug 20, 2009 05:32 pm bahaha clever thinking on the multiple PSU's...I'll check out these silent PSU's, thanks. There's dynamat all over the inside of my case and I bought a video card without a fan...just a whopper of a heat sync. It shouldn't take too much to get this thing fan-free after i figure out the PSU dilemma...
Aug 20, 2009 08:36 pm Eh?......... Quincysan......... your just asking for problems with trying to go fanless.
The heat generated by your computer when under a load, ie recording, can and will cause failure if not properly vented and cooled.
A heat sink alone will not dissipate enough heat to prevent failure.
Moving the computer to a different room, or making a closet that vents to the outside, or building a sound prof cabinet that is vented would be better options.

Aug 21, 2009 10:40 pm They are the Kats Azz.
I use the bigger Antec Phantom and run 7 hard drives. All SATA drives as well as external USB drives. I don't get any temps higher then 35 C when its under heavy load. But don't buy a used one, buy a brand new one and make sure it is a REAL Antec, not some knock off. I have heard of the cheap ones and off brands melting down.
Antec is the only one I have seen work without problems.

Aug 22, 2009 09:48 am @ Rob- There are some impressive water cooling and passive cooling solutions these days. I used to organize LAN PC gaming parties and I've come across quite a few efficient fanless cooling systems...if I melt my computer though, I grant "I told you so" rights to you.
Aug 22, 2009 10:18 am I have seen the liquid cooled PSU's and CPU blocks before. They scare me a little.
My mind always thinks about a small pin hole that develops over time, and hoses down the mother board.
I'm sure that does not happen very often at all. But I just see water and electricity in the same case, and I start to shiver!

Aug 25, 2009 03:40 pm I know of one that has been around for awhile, gets really good reviews, is totally silent and probably heavier than the rest of your PC combined :)

Aug 25, 2009 03:49 pm Alas...My computer requires 488 watts or more. Stoopid power hog.
I know what you mean Rob, if I sit here and actually think about running water through the innards of my computer...sends a shiver down my spine. But I've seen it work before...Going fanless may be a moot point, as I've been offered a very affordable space with a mix room and a rather cavernous drum room in addition to space for a vocal booth. Room for a bed to boot...
$300 a month, yar har!

Aug 25, 2009 03:57 pm Nice, on the 488 though I would read some reviews. A very efficient PSU can do a suprising amount with 400W. There is one gent with a Q6600 and multi SLI setup that loves this PSU.
Not saying it will work, but worth looking into.
