MK-319 vs RODE NT1

I'm looking at these two mics as a good place to start for a large diaphram recording mic. They are both on sale right now for $199.99 at MF including shock mount. I've read good things about both of them. Do any of you guys have experience with them? Which would you recomend? It would be used mainly for vocals and maybe for acoustic guitar.

Thanks, Terry

OK, I posted this question elsewhere and a guy suggested I alos look at the AT 3035. So I would also like to include it in this query.

So what do you guys think. Which one of the three would lyou say is the best "first" large diaphram moc I should buy?

Thanks, Terry

I had asked this same question awhile ago, adn there may be some posts floating around. I have not tried the NT1, but I have the AT3035 and I tested the MK-319. I think the general concensus is that they are both good. From what I remember people said that only an older MK-319 had the sound that they really liked. I was testing a newer one, so I can't say how it would stack up. I tried both of the miocs and I thought they both sounded almost the same. I went with the AT3035 basically because it came with s shockmount and the MK-319 did not. Also, I think the AT3035 handled a little higher SPL's and I was thinking I might use it for some drums micing, whcih I have and I must say that it did great. As far as vocals, I like it but I have nothing else comparable that I have used to record with. But I can say that it is sturdy because I have accidentally knocked it over because my "studio" is so small and it still works great. But, the Octavia is handmade and I think that probably does count for something. hard choice bvut I think either way you are going to be pretty happy. Good luck.

No, it is not only the older MK-319's, they are all good. I said the older one's had a differant kind of warmth. If you watch MF, they will through in the shock mount.

I have both and they are two very different mics. The 319 is fabulous for vocals. Real sweet warm and forgiving. The NT1 is best for overhead, or live recording of instruments. The NT1 is very crisp and almost completely flat. For single instruments I would suggest the Oktava 019 or something similar in a small diaphram cardiod patern. The NT1 is very sensitive and has very little rejection to surrounding sound. I use a pair of NT1's for recording a seventeen piece big band that I am part of. They are great for capturing every little sound.

Well I bought a mic, and it wasn't either of the ones I asked about.

I went to Guitar Center over the weekend and tried about 10 mics. MK319, NT1, Shure KSM32, KSM27,AKG C3000, NT1000, Blue baby bottle, etc. to name a few.

I couldn't get over the great sound of the Rode NT1000. I went back and forth several times between all of the mics. I just kept comming back to the NT1000. What a great sounding mic!

Through a little dealing I got the mic and shock mount for $300 + tax. I'm very happy with it right now. I don't have my recording steup working yet so I can't tell how well it will record but through my PA system it sounds great.

Blessings

That is a pretty good deal then. It hs a very clear sound, I have used them for sampling a time or two. But I will stick with the Oktava for vocal's, as I like the warm fuzzy sound.

You know I really wanted to like the Octava. I really did. It is what I went there to purchase. When I said to the salesman that I had heard that it was a very good mic, he said, "Well for a $200 mic it is." That's when I decided to give a listen to a few of them. I will say that all of the mics I tested sounded good and with a little tweaking I was able to get pretty close to the sound I was after with everone of them. But set flat, that NT1000 just spoke to me. You're probably right. It probably was the "clearness" of it. I could hear every little nuance of my voice in it, but without any peakiness. If it brings out the things on a recording that I was hearing in that sound room, I'm going to have a lot of fun with this mic.

i have had the rode nt-k. that is the nt1000's tube predeccessor and i have to agree that it was a very clear and bright mic. but the reason why i didnt like it was that it was so bright and warm, it made the vocals stand out too much in the mix. so the point of this post is that different people have different tastes in mics. just adding my 2 cents in.

Boy, you can say that again. :-)

Look, I'm not telling anyone what to like. Just sharing my experience. :-)

[but the reason why i didnt like it was that it was so bright and warm, it made the vocals stand out too much in the mix.]

I really want my voice to stand out in the mix. It's the best thing I have going for me. :-)

Also, the NTK is tube, as you stated, so, although they share the same transducer they sound differently and the NTK is $200 more.

Blessings, Terry

hehehe, flaunt what ya got ;-) If you listen to stupes recordings you will find that vocals are not the focalpoint of the music, as that holds true for most heavy metal...so it is no surprise that you two have different tastes...

oooooooo, all this happiness make's me giddy. I have to agree, everyone has a differant idea of what they want to hear. And that is really a good thing, or music would be kinda boring. Anyway, glad you liked the mic. It is an excellant choice, and like I said. I would use that baby for sampling any day of the week. As when you sample something, you do want to hear it all, anc cleanly too.
