Does anyone have advice on fixing an Alesis ADAT XT20 with really high error rates? I just bought it off of Ebay, and it seems to be in very good, clean condition (it only has 117 hours on it). Also, I bought brand new HHB ADAT45 tape (still in the wrapper) to use in it. When I format the tape and play it back the error rate hovers around 100, but when I record any tracks the errors go up depending on how many tracks I'm recording; if I record one track the error rate jumps to around 200, and if I record all 8 tracks the error rate is around 700-800! I've researched how to clean the heads and I did this using 99% IPA and lint-free wipes (holding the cloth against the head and turning the head counter-clockwise). I've also cleaned the entire tape path. None of this has seemed to help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mar 03, 2009 05:12 pm do the errors give any 'diagnostic numbers'?
but in anycase I would check the drive system to see if the gears/pullys are sluggish.

Mar 04, 2009 08:35 pm With error rates that high I think seeing a service tech is about your only hope. If cleaning the heads made no difference then a visit for service is in order.
Mar 05, 2009 03:42 pm There aren't any diagnostic numbers, just the flashing 'sunburst' symbol that means that there is interpolation due to the errors.
I'm not sure how to check the drive system.
Mar 05, 2009 03:44 pm Yeah, I think at this point I might see if I can take it to a service tech. I just hope I can find one near where I live, and that it wouldn't cost more than it's worth to fix.

Mar 05, 2009 09:14 pm I'm not sure on the XT either how to check it.
But ya, it does sound like it needs to be serviced. Sadly ADAT was not a very user serviceable unit at all. Other then a mild cleaning of the roller's and such that is about all one can do to it.
Mar 05, 2009 10:52 pm Sorry to interject here, but Mat, are recording analogue, or digital?
For some reason, it sounds like your having a sync error. Almost as if you have a computer or other device on the network. And there are set to two different clocks.
Anything like that in your set-up?
Apr 21, 2009 12:49 pm Alright, so the problem was the tape.
I assumed that the HHB tape would be good because it is recommended by Alesis in the ADAT manual, and I bought brand new tapes. I bought three HHB tapes, and when they all had the same problem, I thought it was something else.
However, I just bought some unused Maxell ADAT Pro tapes off Ebay and they work perfect (my error rate is less than 10, as apposed to nearing 1000 with the HHB).
So, my warning to anyone reading this is to NEVER BUY HHB ADAT TAPE!!
Thanks for the advice everybody!

Apr 21, 2009 09:12 pm Indeed thanx for putting that up there.
HHB is usually rated up there as pretty good quality. I'm curious to hear if they have any batch issues with that tape at all.
