ok, so i just got rid of my last computer so i need a new studio computer (and this one is a BEAST)

AS of RIGHT NOW i'm running Sonar 5 PE with a MOTU 8pre.

i have a few questions.

1.is vista compatible with both of these? (sonar 5 and the motu)

2. which Vista? 64bit or 32bit? Which is better? 32 or 64?

3. Vista home? home premium? or Ultimate? which is better? what are the advantages of ultimate?

4. I want to upgrade from sonar 5 to 8, how much does that cost? what are the benefits of sonar 8 compared to sonar 5?

5. I heard that XP can only utilize a certin amount of ram..is this true? my new computer will have 12gb of ram. soo.

thats it for now, but im sure more will come up as this conversation gets going.

thank you

mmm,

1. v6 on works fine with Vista, don't know about v5, the motu should be fine as well.

2. If you want to make use of more than about 3.5GB 64 bit is your only option, which also means you'd need to upgrade to Sonar 8 and install the 64 bit version.

3. Vista Home Premium, for recording Ultimate isn't going to get you anything you really need.

4. Check Cakewalks website for upgrade pricing.

5. Both Vista & XP 32 bit (actually any 32 bit OS) are limited to 4GB, of which you can actually use ~3.5GB.

If your new computer has 12GB installed it is likely already setup with Vista Premium/Ultimate. You should also keep in mind that while Sonar works fine with 64 bit many plugin's don't and while Sonar has a wrapper to use 32 bit plugin's in Sonar 64, it can be and often is problematic.

Upgrade price to Sonar 8 Producer Edition is $249.

The last update fixed the stability issues with using some 32 bit in 64 bit mode as well.

As for benefits. Well extreme drop in system resource use is a major thing to start with. Much better use of system resource and DSP processing. Faster load times. And a load of new plug's and the addition of Dimmension Pro sampler/synth.
