im wanting to fade in some guitars holding one note for about 5/6 secs.
i need them not to lose much sustain at all.
is there any other way of doing it other than using a sustain pedal, which i dont have?

was thinking about compressing the hell out of it but it will still lose the edge im guessing, or will it?

I've uber compressed things before but really, just had to time a delay just right. :(

Ya, a squeeze with the compressor should do almost the same. Stand near your amp while doing it, on the edge of feedback will get it.

I don't have any trouble getting 5 or 6 seconds with my Frankensteined Ibanez running through the little Valve Jr.

High volume, a bit more distortion than usual, and proximity to your amp will all help. Otherwise, a Boss CS3 would do it :)
