Can i just note the apparently random ascension of Vocoder popularity?

I seriously just wanted to note it, because even though i can only now afford sporadic visits to HRC, there seems to always be a vocoder, or vocal effect, related topic on the communal board.

not saying its bad or anything, since one of those posts were mine; but i guess it could serve as a topic of discussion right?

I agree. It's because people want to cover up the weakest link of their mixes. They can always trigger a drum or re-amp their guitars but you can't cover up shitty singers (very well that is.)

I wouldnt go as far to say that its used as a cover up i guess... but i would say its more to do with the two factors of availability and popularity coming together at the right time.

it actually gets me thinkin, coz i know there was a post on here a while back about what the future guitar heroes would be like, and all i could think was that in terms of playing guitar i cant imagine how much better or more innovative ppl could get; but then i thought ppl could probably become way more innovative and skilled at using the equipment itself. Like ive noticed with the onset of Post Rock and bands like the Mars Volta really hip and famous guitarists are being worshipped more for their huge arsenal of stomp boxes and all the weird sounds they can create.

maybe itll prove the same for vocalists. I do vox in my band and im always trying to add some stuff to my vocal, not to cover up any short comings but just becoz the technology is there and is exciting to explore.

Yeah, I can agree with you there too. That's why Patton is my favorite vocalist. He uses his voice as an instrument not just the front man appeal.

I'll jump in as well.

Although for me I get to see the two sides of it. The one side that as crux stated uses it as an effect more then a corrective piece. But trust me when I tell you there are a ton who are using it to an extreme to indeed do the cover up or masking of a not so talented vocalist.

It will however run its course as an over used effect, the Autotune I mean. And that is the main effect you are hearing these days is the over cranking of the Autotune boxes or software.

And ya, Patton rocks indeed. Maybe not the greatest of them but indeed he has a command of his abilities to say the least.

I've yet to use a vocal correction (pitch) software that I couldn't tell was there. They are just gross sounding.

seriously, singing on pitch is the most basic of necessary fundamentals of, well, singing. its what it is. if one needs to correct the pitch all the time in every song then practice or work is needed.

im not saying dont use it or anything just i think alot of people are relying on it to make them sound good.

living in denial? i dunno. i gotta say though, in some of my past recordings it wouldve been good to have it.

I don't think of vocoders for pitch correction, I think it's just a damn cool sounding effect in some places.

I don't know dB. (I haven't used it but) I heard Rhianna live and she was HORRIBLE! Now, it could have been a pitch correction AND vocoder but I've never used one nor have I seen a vocoder used. (Note to self: New technique to Google.)

A vocoder I like at as a synth effect, not a pitch corrector...that's for things like auto-tune.

Though, yeah, I think a lot of "artists" use pitch correction, it is a bummer, but that's not a vocoder. Vocoder and pitch correction (as I see it) are two different things.

its got me why someone like Rhianna would use it. she sure as hell doesnt need it.

you can definatley hear the pitch correction or auto tune on stuff though when they use it i agree.

Seems to me that more and more pop music (I include pop rock, rap and dance in this definition) is using this technology.

I can't remember the last time I heard a top 40 song that actually had someone who could sing, and then did. Then I hear people celebrating these "songs" that are just cheap mixes with effects that I could replicate with any modicum of effort.

I used extreme pitch correction as an effect and loved it. It was on a song where the singer moved up an entire octave in a very smooth manner but for some reason the autotune just sounded very cool going in steps. We kept it and he like it.
