Hey all, just wanted to do a survey of what everyones favorite cheap and top-line headhones are and why???
I look forward to seeing what you guys say!

Sep 28, 2008 05:38 pm Depends on the purpose. General listening? The best bang-for-the-buck I know of would be Grado SR225's. Would be worthless for tracking though.
Tracking? Sony 7506's are pretty much an industry standard. Worthless for listening, though.
Mixing? I wouldn't mix with headphones on anyway, so it's moot.

Sep 28, 2008 06:06 pm Heck, my best set of phones is some set I bought for like $12 on sale at Radio Shack, clear, loud, well defined sound...I bought them to have a "cheapo second set" type thing and they are my favs...after that, the set of Sony Monitors I have had for years, forget the exact model.

Sep 28, 2008 10:42 pm I've been pretty happy with my Sony V600's I use them for pretty much everything. I had a pair of Sennheiser's (HD250's I think) that were decent in the same price range.

Sep 29, 2008 01:48 pm Horrid for doing anything mixwise, but nice for tracking drums I like my bose tri-port headphones. I do not have alot of money so a multi-purpose headphone (ipod, gaming, drum tracking) is valuable imo.

Sep 29, 2008 06:31 pm MM has it absolutely correct with his generalization. That is the simple truth on how headphones function, open give much better fidelity and closed better ISO, ISO sucks for letting the drivers work to their best ability so that is why open work better.
For me I keep a variety of headphones. The most used are the ones I prefer to mix in when needed. They are the AKG K240m and the K240s. While I do like them for comfort they do bleed, but others seem to not mind. Even after I show them the effect of the bleed.
To each his own I guess.

Sep 29, 2008 11:49 pm I too have several headphones for different purposes. My AKG K340 (old but legendary) is my favorite when I listen to music or a mix when I can't use the monitors. They are the open type and therefore bleed, but that is not important for what I use them for.
The other headphones I use vary widely in price and quality. Of those I like the Koss Titanium a lot.

I recently was recording hip hop singing the other day, and the track playback of the beat in the phones bled through to the vocaltrack and sounds horrbile. Is this what you mean by getting phones designed for isolation?? Me thinks I need to invest! I never had this problem at our schools studio

Yes, that's why you need closed headphones in those situations. :-)

Oct 02, 2008 02:01 pm I'd have to say my el cheapo Sennheiser HD 201's. They're pretty accurate for 20 bucks.
Oct 09, 2008 06:00 am i'm surprised that no one's mentioned the beyerdynamic DT 770's. they're amazing. not very cheap ($250) but awsome headphones, i love mine. I do have to be careful sometimes with bleeding i avoid them with vocals if the singers wants their headphones blaring loud but normally they do great.
