New rough mix up

I've posted a rough mix of a song called "Everybody's Song" in my profile. Could you please take a quick listen and be brutal?

This is a bit of a departure for me. I don't usually write/record anything this upbeat and positive!

I know the fuzzy guitar needs to be reined in...I was going for texture, and I got a wasp in a jar on the right speaker....

Me likey.

cept for some 'off-ish' vocals. Some of them aren't on key, when they should be.

I guess 'sliding' would be the word.

And the harmony parts have vocals that are out of key. Not always, but enough to notice.

That said, I WISH I had your voice =/.

Otherwise, I don't think there's much to fix there. ( i'm on PC speakers A.W. )

I like the feel of it, and the pace. I like the tone of the lead guitar too.

Thanks for the input.
Yeah, "Off-ish" should read, "Off". I really am not a singer. The harmony vocals were cut and pasted, so they are always off key...
The vocals are one of the things I will fix in the future. I had some serious dental work done so I have a pronounced lisp right now.

Thissssss issssssss everybodeessssss ssssssssong.....

I would say this song sounds very U2ish. Anyhow I like it though. My only comments aside from agree with pjk on some of the pitchiness is that the lead vocals are a bit loud for my taste. Also, personally, I would cut the reverb some on the lead vocals, but it doesn't sound bad if that's the effect you are going for so take the reverb comment with a grain of salt. But this is good work. Everything sounds very clean.

On second listen there are these blasts of white noize sounding something. I think they're supposed to be an open hat? Anyhow, they come in just every once in a while in the right ear. I think they need to be turned down quite a bit, as they are very distracting. If you're using sampled drums, I would suggest to switch out that sample to something less grating.

Also the guitar that just plays the single tone every here and there maybe could come down in volume a bit as well as the first lead solo guitar (just a bit).

Let me know if you're not sure which parts I'm talking about.

hey man... great vibe in this tune... nice tones too... drums sound great and guitar has lot's of great clarity, well panned..

the vocal is good... sounds 'real'

my only thought was to pull it back in the mix a bit... and sing it a little harder...

because it's high in the mix, it seems subdued -like you were holding back - compared to the energy of the rest of the tracks...

I'm a big advocate of the old method of recording where vocal sat further back in the mix... it seems unnatural to have a quiet instrument like vocal blaring over the drums, but everyone does it now...

great song though mate well done.

Gosh...erm....wow...I mean...thank you...I'm a little amazed at that...

Thanks all for the input. Getting the voice to sit back has always been one of those little nagging things with me. Just don't seem to be able to get it right.

Remix on the way...

Hey TC, I just got home today so I'll be giving it a listen tomorrow.

As for the brutal thing. I'm not sure I have that in me but I'll try.

Golly, that music sucks!

How was that?

Just practicing.

I'll catch it tomorrow though for sure.

Brutal is good. This is a learning process not a destination.

Listening back I'm hearing all the things noted that I didn't hear when I was "too close" to the project.

How do you get the voice to sit right?
Twiddle, fade, nudge, twiddle.....

OK, I'm gonna go out on a limb here.

Neal Diamond meets U2. That is the sound I am hearing. Very nicely done for sure. I do like the guitar parts for sure, gotta a very cool vibe to them.

The vocals while not perfect are pretty cool and give it the Neal Diamond feel for me. And while the; guitars give a very U2ish feel there is something else from the 80's that is in the feel of it as well. I just can't figure out what it is.

I have to agree on that splash cymbal('s) thing, it just needs to be hidden a bit in the mix, maybe a tiny pinch of verb on it to give it a bit more tail would sound smashing.

While I agree with Cabsy that a bit more power on the vocal and then settling it back would be cool, it is good as is also. But indeed it should be pinched just a bit to set it back a tad in the mix.

Now, I cranked it up on the large format speakers and have to put a second comment in on the splash cymbal thing. OUCH! It is very loud in the mix for sure, I wasn't just hearing it because coolo mentioned it.

But lastly I gotta say it is a killer tune for sure. The arrangement is grand and the lead guitar parts fit right in there. They do take a big place when they come in but they fit that way for sure.

I've already played it at least 7 or 8 times enjoying it more each time.

I think Noize summed up my thoughts best. I instantly heard the U2 vibe, and Neal Diamond, and now it dawns on me the vox have a Simple Minds kind of thing going on as well, though the vox need to be a bit more powerful to me. Mix sounds well done to me other than the mentioned cymbal which is on the loud side compared to the rest of the mix. Overall well done, nice job on the song/arrangement.
