Blue Ball Microphone Issue

Pardon the semi-inapropriate title but i recently recieved the new microphone manufactured by BLUE appropriately named the ball (due to its shape). I used this microphone to close mic my kick drum and it sounded great, but when i used it for vocals it is clipping at a volume that is too low for my mix. I've heard home recordings that use this mic for vocals and they sound amazing. I simply can't understand why mine won't work the same.

you could have blown out the element by using it on a kick... they're basically a gold plated piece of foil (or thinner - ribbons are actual leaf) ...so you probably greatly exceeded the max SPLs for the mic.

I just looked at the specs for the mic. The mic can handle up to 162 dB. Your just fine to use it on kick.

One thing I found unusual, is the fact that it is a dynamic mic, but it requires phantom power. Which is strange. But it is not a 600 ohm load, it is a 50 ohm load instead. Which is why the +48 volts is needed.

Check to make sure the phantom is on. If it is, then check the cable. If that is fine, you may have a issue with the preamp.

One thing is if he understands what clipping is. You say clipping too low. You honestly can't clip the signal if it is too low. It needs to exceed the channel input level to clip.

On the other hand if you mean it is simply not getting aloud signal, then that is easy. Turn up the pre amp gain and you'll be golden.

The BLUE Ball mic has a red LED just above the "BLUE" logo on the front of the mic. Is that LED on? If it isn't, you aren't giving it the 48V phantom power that it needs.

The Ball is hybrid dynamic mic and will produce enough of a signal to work with when used as a kick mic with the 48V phantom power absent. I checked this with my BLUE Ball a minute ago, so this isn't just theory.

Turn on the phantom power and prepare to be blown away!
