TonePort UX2

Basically, I think its a right pain in the arse. Starting to wish I hadn't bothered with it.

Neither Cool Edit or Reaper work since I have installed the TonePort. Reaper wont even open, Cool Edit opens but then wont actually record and the Line6 Monkey doesn't even know that I have a TonePort.

I run Cakewalk HS 6 XL with mine and it's flawless. It takes some setting up as far as latency and stuff but it's not bad.

Actually, I've got it working now. Its the dogs bollocks. Whatever I get in the headphones I can get the same sound played back. Its amazing.

There are still a few bugs I have to iron out, basically once I have started recording in Cool Edit, once I stop again, I cant get any sound through the headphones unless I am actually recording.

Amazing though, it sounds great and I haven't even started really fiddling with GearBox yet, all the stuff I am getting is just through a basic sound I have found in gearbox and my pedals. If anyone has some advise that will stop me reading through the whole manual that would be great!

Hmmm, I've encountered another problem. This one, a lot more irritating. It was working fine yesterday but now once I have set up the tone I want I go to record, press record in Cool Edit and my computer crashes and says something about it has stopped doing something that could be damaging.

I'm getting this message up on my blue screen "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Really, really irritating. I haven't manged to make a single recording yet

dB would be a good one to field this one probably.

looks like a hardware driver problem to me, blue screens are often some driver issue...

Is this your first/only USB device? if so, maybe it's the USB driver...do you have the most recent TonePort software?

I've started using REAPER as it appears to be less resource heavy than Cool Edit and it works. I think with Vista (all the cack that goes with it and Norton anti-virus), Cool Edit and Gearbox my computer just gives up the ghost. The only problem I have is that when I click away from GearBox, say to REAPER everything is fine, then when I go back to GearBox I get no sound, when I go back to REAPER i can hear again? Odd. Usually I now what tones I want so its not a problem changing tone as I know which one will fit. This problem will go away by closing and restarting GearBox anyway.

I'm well impressed with the TonePort/Gearbox though. I had my first proper day, spent all day playing with it yesterday, going through the choice of amps and cabinets and the tone presets. I've saved a few of my own tones and managed to make the perfect v, heavy guitar tone for me! and a really nice clean tone that works well with the Jackhammer and a good bass tone. I'm having a little more trouble getting a slightly lighter, Pearl Jam/Nirvana distortion (A boss DS-1 sound) but I might just stick to the DS-1 for that instead.

All in all I'm happy, expect some slow very heavy, durdgy grunge from me anytime soon.

I just tried to turn off the 'close device when inactive' but it still turns the tracks 'offline' when I switch to another window.

This is default behavior for reaper: to disable your tracks when you click to a different window. It may be changable, I'm not sure.

Another thing that may fix this, is to play with your monitoring method. If you're monitoring through reaper, then when you click away, it's probably disabling that track. If you can have your audio interface route your incoming signal directly to your hardware output, then it should be able to bypass reaper, and go directly to your outputs.

You'll want to turn off monitoring on that reaper track, or you'll hear it twice.

Its the GearBox I have the trouble with. Once I have clicked away from it I get no sound after I have clicked back on it. I can fiddle with my settings but I can only hear myself when I have clicked back to REAPER.

I'm using REAPER and getting on with it quite well, In another thread I've posted my first effort using the TonePort and REAPER. REAPER is great when you get used to it.

This is a common feature(yes feature) of every DAW. In Cubase as well as most other software there is an option to "release ASIO in background". Basically when you are in whatever DAW you are using, ASIO is tied and dedicated to your recording software. Releasing it in the background gives access to the sound device when you click away from your DAW.

Cool, I'll see what I can do. Out of curiosity, what exactly is an ASIO?

Its a deal developed by Steinberg, here's the Wiki for ASIO:

That is WAREZ my friend. Not highly looked upon. I know it says try before buy but, who do you know that has actually paid for it? Well...besides myself and others. If you plan on buying it, good for you. If not, delete it and go download freeamp3 from fretted synth.
