i have kinda asked this question before but have managed to figure some of it out to a point. When i try to download my tascam US-1641 drivers, the computer starts doing it, then around a 1/4 of the way through it the computer shuts down after showing the blue screen. i thought originally it was the unit itself but it seems its the download part it doesnt like. i have XPservice pack2 home. Is that the same as professional and is it ok to use?
The aftermath of the shutdown is i lose all audio, camera and cd/dvd. among others. when i look in device manager there are exclamation points next to them and in "my computer" the cd/dvd drive isnt even there anymore. i have just had it back form repairs, Again. and still does the same thing. it doesnt do it on other computers. should i kiss the computer goodbye?

What are the specs of the PC that is doing it?

And you say it doesn't do it on other PC's? You need to find out what is different on the PC that is crashing and fix that part of the equation to allow it to accept the driver download.

well its just been back from repairs so its back to default, to be honest i havent done anything to it, i would have thought that loading up the drivers wouldnt be an issue, or is it? im not a full bottle on this. the thing that is strange is the loss of audio n stuff as well as cd/dvd drive and exclamation points next to them in device manager. have you seen this happen before?

Sounds like a ram stick. If you have more than one, pull one and try, and then the other and try.

Once you have it back up and running (before the fall) try and do a system restore point. Maybe you can then just do a system restore if it craps out again.

Should save you a bunch of time resetting all the parts back to normal.

only thing is though its a laptop. can you access the ram stick? ive never seen one or even been inside a lapy before to know what it looks like. a normal desktop i have.
The idea of a system restore is good, can i restore after they've installed a brand new motherboard? can only try i suppose.

There are two door's on the bottom of the lap top. One may be larger and covers the battery. The other smaller one is were the RAM is hiding. It is very similar to how the RAM clips in on a desk top unit.

wow, that sucks, but it's good it's warrantied.

I replaced (actually, dell did) a MB on my dell lappy, not a cheap endeavor.

Anyhow, I doubt the system restore would work for a 'before' the MB replacement. I just meant that when you have the machine in good running condition, create a restore point, then attempt an install. If the install craps out, then do a restore to put the PC back to before the install.

It may only have 1 ram chip in it, and, I don't know if it'll run on only one, if there's two in there. It's worth trying, but I don't have much experience tinkering on laptops.

I fixed up a dell M50 I got at a city auction that had a burned up MB... it was cheaper to buy one with a cracked screen off ebay and cannibalize them together... about $200 total :)

if i eventually find out what the problem is, i will post it as a new topic. im hoping though that i can just get another computer. really i want one with a faster drive speed than the current. im thinkin a mac would do nicely. was wondering what people here think in regards to a laptop and desktop. which one is better for recording and why?
Cheers.

Heh, I think you've already dealt with some of why I like (PC) desktops: you can work on them easily.

I can swap out off-the-shelf ram, or a different motherboard, I can swap out the processor, or add a hard-drive.

Also, putting a PCI solution in a desktop (tower) pc really gives you fast bandwidth for tracking. Plus, horsepower is usually higher in desktop PCs for equal-spec'ed laptops.

I don't this this is so much an issue anymore, with solid firewire solutions, but PCI is still king in my book.

My laptop is great (using it right now) for a lot, but for my audio work, I have a standalone PC, with WinXP-Pro SP2, running very clean.

There's another angle: laptops often come with a lot of software on them you don't need (referring to windows based). Mac may be a lot better.

That said, I do use my laptop for recording 2 channel projects (live work, location, etc) but i don't use it for much more than that. Now Mac laptops may be a much different story. I think that with decent firewire interfaces, they can do pretty sizable projects. You'd need to purchase the horsepower up front, but I'm pretty sure they make quite a nice solution.

Course, you'd be married to the Mac world, spendy software, and spendy plugs. But you'd get packaged reliability, and stability.
