Yup, I've pretty much decided that I'm going to be taking a year long audio engineering course. One of the colleges here has an evening course that will allow me to continue working at my day job while attending school once a week in the evenings. I'm actually pretty stoked about it.
Of course I am realistic about ever getting an engineering job that pays as well as the job I have now but I'm sure it will do wonders for my personal growth. I'm taking this course for my own enjoyment. If nothing else I will have access to a real studio and will be recording solo artists, duets and bands as well as orchestras. I would not normally have access to these artists otherwise so I'm really looking forward to it.

Jan 02, 2008 01:26 pm I had a decent home setup for a few years before going to school. It was half and half a refresher course and an eye(ear) opening experience.
Now only if it didn't come with the "high school drama" that the kids carried with them from high school... lol
Anyway, it should be a good experience for you, have fun!

This is actually an item on my "questions to ask the instructor". I'm 45 now and I don't really want to be the oldest ever to attend the course. However, I would probably still go... I'm rather determined at this point.

Jan 02, 2008 01:45 pm Man, I wouldn't worry about that stuff BH. If you want to learn, you should learn. I think it's great. I'm trying to take a class or two locally on mixing, and mastering, but the schedules do not work for me this semester (or last...). Instead, I'm taking a tap dancing class...

Jan 02, 2008 03:19 pm But seriously, My Best friend from High School went to school for radio and television communication or something like that. He now works at a Radio station in Muncie, IN. He DJ's, makes commercials and works with all kinda cool audio gear. When we record (He is also the Drummer for our Band Twin Twelve) he does most of the Mastering. So He has been teaching me a little here and there.
Sorry back to the point of this thread, He learned alot and continually amazes me with what he can do with audio.

Don't let school get in the way of your education.
It pretty much sums up my opinions on the education system.

Somebody once asked Jerry Reed if he knew how to read music. "Yep," he twanged, "but not enough to hurt my playin."
Jan 02, 2008 06:46 pm My wife and I have SERIOUS differences of opinion on the subject of college and higher education...our kids are gonna get some mixed messages later in life...
I feel for 'em already.
Depending on what their goals are, I really think it's possibly better to work for four years in an entry level position in the field and earn money learning rather than spending money learning the same stuff...
...but what do I know, I am not college edumicated...

Jan 02, 2008 07:27 pm Well, for a 45 year old like myself, going to college has a new meaning. I mean, I have a sucessful career already. This is just for fun. Actually when I was young and going through college the first time, it was for Graphic Design. I then ended up in I.T. Now that I'm in I.T. maybe I'll end up in Audio. Who knows. I sure don't any more. Sooo, this is just a thing that I'm doing for fun... and well a third career can always come in handy.
I'm thinking that maybe I should end up in the PC gaming industry as I could combine Audio/IT/Graphics all into one. Mind you, I was also a chef (papers and all). Hmm, not sure how to combine cooking into all of this.
either way, its better than sitting on the couch.

heh heh
Right on, man . The worst that could happen is that they teach you to complress the living crap out of everything that comes your way, and hell, if that works ...

Jan 02, 2008 07:56 pm Yep, at just a couple weeks away from 50 I'm still torn on the college thing. I wish I had, but on the other hand, if I had what would life have been like? Not as much fun, or more fun. I've looked at a couple of classes I would be interested in but passed. I've also been offered a teaching spot for experimental audio a couple of times only to turn it down for lack of money in doing it.
I would say go for it BH. I kind of wish at times I would have.

Jan 03, 2008 11:15 pm Good luck man! I went to Recording Arts Canada out of Hamilton/Stoney Creek Canada. It was expensive and intense! Did it get me a job in the industry...well I do own my own recording studio now, BUT where I live has a lack of clients. haha
Hope you have a blast and learn some great stuff.

Jan 09, 2008 01:22 pm Bwahaha, oh ya, can't be cool without a pair of Heelys. Mind you, my kids got me some Chuck Taylor's for Christmas so at least I can be a little bit cool.
Jan 09, 2008 01:24 pm I told my oldest I wanted a pair of Heelys, she looked at me and said in a most serious tone "If you wear them to get me from school you have to take the wheels out in the building or you'll get in trouble".
:-D
Chuck Taylors....niiiiice.

Jan 11, 2008 10:42 pm When I skiid I used a thing called a BoneFone. It was the coolest little player, amp and speaker package that slung around your neck and the speakers hung kind of around your chest, strapped down tight it really gave you a thump when you turned it up. And it was loud to whomever wore it but wasn't annoyingly loud to those around you. Very cool thing to use when I practiced on freestyle runs. But most good places had killer sound systems when we competed so you didn't need it. but for biking and skiing the thing was great.
By the way, this was before the Walkman was around.
Here is what it looked like.
