mic->preamp->mixer->interface->computer.

XLR or TRS Cables are just fine.

er, something to know:

If you plug into preamp first, then cable from preamp output over to the mixer input, don't use the mixer XLR input, as this will be expecting MIC level signal. The preamp will be putting out LINE level signal, so you'll be preamping your signal twice, which will be bad.

You will want to connect from the preamp output, to the mixer LINE level input. This probably will be unbalanced (1/4", not XLR) but it won't be any big deal at this point. LINE level signal doesn't need the balanced cable as much as MIC level signal does.

Also, if your unbalanced runs are short (under 5 meters) then you shouldn't have to worry about signal interference. Also, don't run your LINE level cables near electric power cables, if you can help it, to minimize interference.

Optical cables are for connections using light, and ADAT are for connections using DIGITAL signal. Neither of these would work for connect analog signal from preamp to mixer.

Using XLR cables for MIC cables, and using shielded TS cable between the preamp and mixer will be fine. The preamp may output signal using an XLR jack, but your mixer probably will only accept LINE level with a 1/4" TS jack.

hope that helps

If I was using an outboard preamp I wouldn't even have the mixer in the path at all unless it was needed for some aux loop effect or something, I'd put the preamp straight to the interface...

Cut out any unnecessary middle-men.

hey man and thanx for the reply but u comgused me a little look.. here is the mixer i am gonna buy and here is the preamp

www.thomann.de/gr/yamaha_01v96_v2.htm

www.thomann.de/gr/rme_micstasy.htm

so what u saying is that i put the mics in the rme micstacy and then send the wih xlr male and female cables to the mic inputs on the console right?or i should ger xlr to jack cables and send the from the preamp to the mixer with xlr out in the line in?

the audio interface should be connected with optical in and outs to the mixer?is that correct? the audio interface with the preamp dont connect at all?

this is my audio interface..motu hd896
www.thomann.de/gr/mark_of_the_unicorn_896.htm

if you are using the MOTU HD 896 you just have to plug the mic right into it....there's preamps in that thing....you would be running it through 3 seperate preamps (not good) if you go to an outboard pre, to mixer, to 896....

KEEP it simple man! you are definately over complicating the situation....plug the mic right into the 896 and press "record".

that will give you "pro sound".

also the MOTU hd896 is essentially the EXACT same thing as the RME unit that you linked to....you do NOT need both of them....they both do the same thing...

same goes for the Yamaha kind of...

you're essentially buying three of the same things....pick one and buy it.

Wyd has it right. The HD192 has no pre-amps. Got tons o money and want seperate pre's then that is the way to go.

The 896HD on the other hand has 8 pre-amps already and from what I hear they sound fantastic.

I would personally use that extra money on some nice compressors.

yeah buti want to make a pro studio..and i know that for sure i need a good mixer..
about the preamp...first i put my eye in the focusrite red 1..its a tube preamp
www.thomann.de/gr/focusrite_red_1.htm
maybe its better than the rme...to go from the preamp then the mixer and the 896 hd right?
