I haven't really heard of ADK mics before, but they've been highly recommended to me. Does anybody have any experience with these?

Silly me, I should have just googled it in the first place. What was I thinking posting that question on a recording forum? :)

I've heard you can mod them into something half decent if you're that way inclined. I'm doing it with an MXL 2001 at the moment. Search for ADK Dave Royer mod or something like that. Dave royers the guy who makes Royer mics, has some awesome info.

I've only had experience with their custom series. They were on par with other mic's in their price range. One of the mic's in their Studio series is an excelant mic for female vocals from what I have heard. Sorry I don't know the exact model though on that one.

Thanks, Noize. I've heard they far excell what you expect in their price range. I'll look into it further.

Also, my new album "Everything's Changed" is done. You can hear a couple of songs at my site: www.karynwhittemore.com . A Shure KSM44, Mackie Onyx mic pre and LA2A (plug in) were pretty much all that were used for my vocal chain.

I'll be popping by to listen probably tomorrow. I assume you have a CD for sale as well then if it is done?

And ya, I guess I was a little vague there with the description. I did find them comparable for a custom shop mic. I wish I could have used some of the standard built units. But the girl I know who uses their studio series is extremely happy with it and hypes it all the time.

Hi Karyn, I'm listening to a clip right now (just on really crap little computer speakers), but I like your voice a lot. You don't seem to have any trouble with bright silibants, and the high end of your voice is smooth. I know you're not looking for a vocal critique. I only bring it up because I have used several ADK mics and think they are great mics. I've used the old ST's (which I have a matched pair of) and my friend with the studio has a matched pair of Vienna's.

First off...their customer service is beyond belief. I've been mailing Larry at ADK for the last week because I just bought an AP-1 preamp, and had a ton of questions answered, pretty quickly. He also gave me his cell number (which I won't give out) so you can probably call him for his recommendations. Top notch. I really believe they are trying to make the best mic they can for the dollar.

The ST's I own were ADK's first attempt at a German voicing.

Larry said "ST was the first "Hamburg-leaning" or Older German Historical Curve we ever did. So rather a trailblazer.

It was built because in 1999 and 2000 all the Reviewers said the original
A51 was Great for Female Vox and Guitars. So the ST was designed with MALE VOCALS as First APP, (Sax, Cabs, Ladies with Sibilance Issues, lot's of others)."

Take that for what it's worth. The Vienna's and Hamburgs are similar, but the Vienna's have a much more "shingy" high end...very extended. On acoustic guitars you really get a lot of pick attack. Not good on my mandolin. But in a review I read about the Hamburg's and Vienna's a good point was made; you can EQ out the highs easier than you can add them. Your voice isn't thin or too silibant, so maybe the Vienna would really help it sit well in the mix.

Now their top mics like the TL, TC and TT are supposed to be really wonderful. They are made in factories with better quality control. "Ray Charles tracked his final 3 CD’s on the TT or CE." Not too shabby.

The Studio series SC1 (not that your looking for a small diaphram mic) is (I believe) the same mic as the Joe Meek JM 27. Pretty hashy sounding. Good for snare drum, not your vocals.

The Vienna's and Hamburgs are probably in your price range. You can find them for about $200 a piece. Get a solid mic pre too. I doubt the Onyx is gonna let whatever you buy shine.

Thanks for the very informative post Wiggus! I'm going to try an ADK mic today at the sound check before our CD release party. I can't remember what model the sound guy said he had but it's a large diaphram condensor.

I'm not sure how helpful it will be as it will be through a mixer I don't really know and through a stage monitor. Oh well.

Sorry to hear about your feelings on the Onyx pres from Mackie. :)

....and yes Noize, the CD is done and out there. (see my new avatar for proof) :)

I'll understand if it's too chicky for ya. My next project is a salute to death metal. You might might want to wait for that. :) ;)

The CD release went great tonight. It was packed, and we sold a bunch.

Naw, nothing is too chicky in my book. Good music is good music no matter what style it is.

I assume you are pulling my leg on the death metal thing, if not. Well then I can't wait to see what you do with that. I would imagine you would find an interesting way to interpret that style into your own.

Yeah, I'm pulling your leg. I'm afraid death metal and I shall never meet. Though, I like a little crunchy guitar as much as the next girl.

I went to a punk show last week and they almost literally blew me out the door because it was so loud. There is no way the human ear can sustain those volume levels without damage.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the Onyx is fine, but with a voice like yours, you will hear the benefit of a better Pre. A lot of units with built in Pre-amps have to make concessions for cost. Mic pre's are an easy one to skimp on. Even the Digidesign units are the same way. I'm just realizing now that, as much as I thought I liked my FMR Really Nice Preamp, it's a little nasal sounding compared to my ADK AP-1, and the FMR is a little shy on the bottom. I'll still use it on electric guitar though. A nice mic pre will be more dynamic for vocals, probably a sweeter top end, and a tighter focus. They really make a difference when you begin to stack up a bunch of tracks.

How did you like the ADK? It's more a matter of finding the RIGHT mic for your voice.

I didn't get to try the ADK. The sound guys were preoccupied with alot of other little techical issues.

No doubt that better mic pres could be a significant improvement.

I had it narrowed down to:

-Manley Vox Box
-Great River
-Langevin DVC Combo
-Millenium Origen
-Avalon
-Viper

Then I thought, You know what? I think my voice would sound happier if I took that money and bought a new car. So, I bought a new Honda Fit and that's done wonders for the blissful emotional subtext in my songs. It's all about the music. :) :) :) :D

Bravo! You hit the nail on the head. The performance IS more important than all the gear. Too bad the Fit doesn't have an option for a Great River stereo mic Pre in the hatch, so you could do live remote recording.

BTW, :-) is 25 years old today. How NPR knows the first day it was used is a mystery.
