according to new IRS rules, the guy owed 150,000 in taxes the moment he acquired the ball. it used to be that you did not owe taxes until you acquired money for the unique historical object or object of value, but this is, apparently, no longer true. guy caught the ball and owed 150 grand immediately.

that's screwed up!

man, that is messed up...the taxes in this country are incredible, and we don't even know the half of what we actually pay...a few dollars of every phone bill is just federal taxes...every hotel room stay is filled with extra taxes...gas, cigarettes...so man taxes that sneak in to businesses that would rather not charge it but are told they have to.

Now catching a ball at a game...WOW...and 150k?!?!

what does that have to do with baseball? :)

anyway... it's not that he owes that much in taxes... its just that some lawyer says he owes that much... and there's an awful lot of history in caught baseballs not being taxed. As long as all of the other famous balls havn't been taxed when caught then he could argue that the application of the law is discriminatory and selective.

I have a ball signed by the entire Detroit Tigers from the early 90's... could I still claim the loss? :)
