You Minnesotans must've loved the Vikes-Jets game

Wow, it looks like the Vikings have a pretty talented and deep team from initial impressions this preseason. 4 defensive scores in 2 preseason games, Adrian Peterson getting 70 yards on 8 carries tonight, and a defensive front that's just scary. Might not be such a bad season after all!

Wish I could say the same for my Chiefs. We got pushed around and abused on our home field last night, and our 3rd string QB has waaaay outperformed either our 1st or 2nd QBs. Not a good sign.

Sadly I didn't get to watch the game. I was in here tweaking a couple of mixes and reading threads. I will catch the highlights though on the re run of the news or on ESPN later.

But ya, the local paper seems to be liking Peterson for sure. Could we really have a decent season after all?

Yeah, man, that was awesome. Vikes Offense only had 3 plays in the first quarter, we were ahead 14-3 at the end of it...Chad Pettington sucked...Greenway and Edwards are going to prove to be a couple of key defensive players, Adriane Peterson looked solid...but he has got to stop running so physical or he'll end up injured again...he HAS to protect himself a little.

I may have seriously misjudged the teamn this year...but as soon as I buy in they'll kick me in the jimmy so I can't get too excited...I've been a fan for too many years to not know how this team works.

The single biggest disappointment of the Vikes game was seeing a Coors Light commercial with that big, fat ******* Denny Green in it...

We Cheesheads liked the Packers-Seahawks game too. Both the offense and the defense were operating at full throttle (at least, for a preseason game!)

Favre looked strong, and his receivers made some great catches. Fourth Quarter was very sloppy, but who's really paying attention at that time?

Yeah, I watched a little bit of both Packer preseason games...maybe our division will actually matter this year.

On a somewhat related note, I bought Madden NFL 08 for PC on Friday. I bough 06 when it came out and have been playing it off-and-on since then. But wow the graphics, player animations, and new features have come a long way even in just 2 years. Its a really nice game, and I've been playing the hell out of it for about 48 straight hours now :)

If any of you are into video games and football, I highly recommend this title. I still maintain that Madden taught me just about everything I know about football. The plays, the formations, the terminology...it really does give you some insight into the mechanics of the game.

Anyways, I'm off to go lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl this year (oh if I could only take a game pad and control the real Chiefs, I think they'd actually be better off this year hehehhe).

i need a book for my madden. i still have 2007, but even the 2008 book would explain certain things to me. the game doesnt' come with adequate instructions. it could be argued that the game doesn't come with instructions at all.

forty, I agree with you. That is one reason I stopped playing those types of games. Even EA has gotten kind of skimpy on the manuals they make for those types of games. But look at their manual for things like Need for Speed and such and they are pretty complete in detail. Why can't they do the same for the Madden games and the like. EA is the biggest creator of those type of game and you would think they would provide better documentation on them.

Man, Eli Manning sucks tonight...in later review it appears they won though...Culpepper apparently had a decent game based on thew highlights I saw.

I agree about the under-documentation of the features of Madden. I mean, all of the controls are pretty well-documented...all the pre-snap and post-snap actions on offense and defense. But they left out a few things that puzzles me.

For instance, they introduced a new feature where you can tell a defender to focus on the line of scrimmage, useful on 3rd and 4th down plays. But they don't tell you how to do it in the manual.

Or the new feature called "spotlight player". It tells you how to do it, but doesn't tell you what that actually means...OK so a player is now spotlighted...now what?

The one thing that I wish they'd focus on, or at least create a website for, is the actual underlying fundamentals of the game itself. How am I supposed to know that a curl route is most effective against a zone defense? Or that a slant route is most effective against man coverage? Or what the hell is a Zone Dog? What are the advandages of the different types of schemes for the safeties? What's a good run-blocking scheme? How does a cover 2 work? Or a zone blitz?

I mean they kind of throw you to the wolves and if you play on anything higher than the Pro (meduim) skill level, you're toast without that knowledge.

Yeah dB I gotta worry about Eli's future. He's in the hot seat this year and if he doesn't produce, the city of NY will have his head. I think he'd be more successful elsewhere where there's less pressure, a better offensive line, and a better locker room atmosphere. But, look at his brother, who had some terrible seasons in his first few years as a pro.

Wow, I did a bit of Googling and came across a Wiki page for football strategy. This is a pretty good rundown for those wanting to know more about the mechanics of the game:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football_strategy

I think I'll cross-post this in the fantasy football thread for those who aren't that familiar with American football.
