Aug 01, 2007 11:23 pm In theory you can, but if youve never mixed before its better to start with monitors to give you a sense of what flat is, and how it effects sound.
The theory is that if you know a piece of music so well, you could use that to reference on any speaker and if you train your ears to understand how things sound on those speakers vs. monitors you can just make up for the differences in your own mind.

Aug 02, 2007 09:20 am yep, like crux said, they'll skew the mix, but if you learn their strengths and weaknesses, you can get pretty good at them.
Just play with them, and test your mix on other systems. See how you're mix is stacking up.
Aug 02, 2007 09:23 am The answer is "yes, you can" I did for a long time before I could afford a real monitoring system. The biggest thing about your monitors isn't having the best, it knowing them, their strengths and weaknesses...so you can compensate while mixing.

Aug 02, 2007 01:16 pm How might I go About hooking them up?
Aug 02, 2007 01:27 pm run your main outs of your sound card into a set of ins into your receiver...then it's using the receiver as usual...
Aug 02, 2007 05:45 pm keep in mind, you're gonna want to check your mix on as many different sets of speakers as possible....headphones, car speakers, anything.....if ya get some decent monitors in a fairly neutral room you won't hafta do that....they save time.
