When using cool edit pro 2.
My Wav files are recording as solid rectangular blocks... According to the clip meters it's near 0db and no clipping occurs.
Is this me or inaccurate peak levels?

Jan 23, 2003 10:07 am Are you zoomed in too far long the vertical axis?

Jan 23, 2003 09:36 pm I would guess that you are zoomed in to tight, try to soom out and expand the audio wave that way. If that doesn't do it, then there is a problem you need to address with Syntrilium ans that is not how it should look.

Jan 23, 2003 09:39 pm So you're not zoomed in on the vertical axis? Are you sure - do the scale reading on the side of waveform display show 0db, -3db, -6db etc?
The thing is, if the wave's look like "solid rectangular blocks" then you have definatly clipped the signal (unless you like recording bad-arse sub bass squarewaves :D) - the only thing is that if the waveforms were looking like this at 0db then you would have almost undoubtedly overloaded the A-D converters at the input stage of your soundcard resulting in some hardcore digital distortion.
Well, if you are not zoomed in on the vertical (can't stress that enough - not the horizontal axis, but the verical) then something is very amiss with your copy of CEP2 - have you tried opening these waveforms in another sample editing package? If so, are the results the same (big ol' square waves)?
Hmmmmz.

Jan 24, 2003 01:04 pm Ok,
I recorded a sample in sound forge using their clip meter, I opened that same file into cool-edit pro 2 and monitored the play back of that file, it came nowhere near 0db.
Even with a clean Guitar going straight into the sound card distorts when trying to reach 0db using cool-edit.
I may have a misunderstanding of how cool-edit monitors the peaks, 0db it at the very end of the meter and has a separate section which lights red if you clip, well, that's how I understand it anyway.
There is a change of color a few inches away from 0db as this link below shows.
You can also compare the two recorded wav files and I'm sure you'll all agree that one of them is a bit off!!
Jan 24, 2003 01:10 pm Is that a clean electric you are running straight into the sound card? ya really don't wanna do that...

Jan 24, 2003 01:14 pm Yeah, why? what's the dangers?
I'm only in the writing process, I know that recording anything final shouldn't be.
Jan 24, 2003 01:20 pm Actually recording anything shouldn't be, rarely will that sound decent...

Jan 24, 2003 01:21 pm You're right, it sounds pathetic!!
Could this be the problem though?
Jan 24, 2003 01:24 pm Only one way to find out...try it the right way :-)

Jan 24, 2003 01:27 pm I've tried it through the Korg Ax1000g and it's the same, I haven't got enough cables as yet to go into the mixer..I'll have ago this weekend.
