Jun 26, 2007 06:14 am Cool thanks! Looking forward to your critique!
Jun 26, 2007 07:00 pm hmmm the bass is masked by the guitars almost completely in the upper mids (i'm listenin' on 2" computer speakers) usually on commercial mixes i can still hear the bass guitar....here, it pops up every once and awhile until the guitars get gooin...pic a strong frequency in the upper mids on the bass (i'd say somewhere around 700-1k) and just give it like a 3db boost, then notch it out 3db's on the guitars, that should give it some presense....the vocals, drums, and guitars are PERFECT as far as working well together. dig the harmony on "joined as one"...nice, i was wonderin' why you had the delay commin' outta one side, then it built nicely...nice touch.
*second listen*
the kick isn't poking through the mix the way i'd like to hear it...if compressing try settin' the attack time a bit longer, or better yet, mult and parallel compress the kick track (i can explain this further if you're not fimillar with what that is)...tone-wise the kick is dead on, it's just not jumping out of the speakers as much as it could. damn them vocals sit nicely right on top of everything without beein' over-the-top loud....how'd ya do it? are you in this band?

Jun 26, 2007 10:53 pm I am the guitarist, writer, producer, engineer, mastering guy, you know how it goes! :))
Shane's voice just has a natural timbre that sits perfectly in a mix with rock guitars. I do minimal eq'ing on his voice.
The kick pounds my head off in my car (infinity sound system) and yes on my home commercial speakers Bose 301's it could use a pump but its the happy medium thang...
All guitar tracks were via the Line 6 Vetta II Combo mic'd with a Royer R121. 4 tracks all played separately and with little mic movements with each pass and a different guitar for each two pairs.
Bass direct...
Thanks for the ideas I have used that drum technique before...very cool! I'm off to tweak that bass using your thoughts.
Peace!
Jun 26, 2007 11:08 pm yeah, i have no idea what's really gooin' on in your low end...so i'm sure it's more my lack of perception in that area that made me think that.
as for the ribbon mic on the guitars....i'm 99.9% certain the next mic we get is gonna be a ribbon...we've got all other bases covered...and i can't wait to try it on distorted guitar...next to the 57 a ribbon is the most mic i've read about on them.....thing is, i don't do alotta distorted guitar tracks! hehe (i was a die-hard metal head in the 90's) most of what i record now is standard 'blugrass/gosple' type stuff...so, and now that i think about it, it's really good for me to get this angle on genera/recording styles, it's been a real eye opener and given my sense of objectivity a good boost, but back to point...so a typical day of tracking (i usually sit in on bigger studio's) is fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar, stand up bass, and live drums) so the overall goal is 'natural' sounding (which is far from rock) and distorted guitars is something i havn't recorded in over 6 months!!!! lol
as for the drums, i'm thinkin' the snare's dominance was also exaggerated by my speakers frequency response.

Jun 27, 2007 06:57 am You will LOVE the Royer if thats the one you get. I 've used it on acoustics, piano and stand up bass and it gave me exactly what my ears were hearing and wanted to hear. You can even turn the royer around and record acoustics with the back of the mic (if you have a mic cord that has the poles flipped) to reduce proximity and any boom. With the royer you can basically throw away the EQ.

Jun 28, 2007 09:21 pm Hey Rob, sorry I'm late getting to listen here. Love the tune for sure. Didn't listen critically though so won't comment on the mix at the moment. But it sounded pretty good here. Hearing the samples makes me impatient for the Cd to come out. But I guess I have plenty of patients really so these bits will fill the void till it is released. All that I have heard so far sound like killer tunes. The vox are rocking harder then ever on this one for sure though.

Jun 28, 2007 10:19 pm WYD, if you want to find a reasonably priced ribbon have a look at Karma. They have one at a killer price. I love the Royers as well though, nice stuff indeed.
Jun 29, 2007 01:35 am will do, Karma has been commin' up alot lately.
Jun 29, 2007 08:56 pm the vocal sound is excellent, bass is not sticking out as much as i like either. good tune though..
peace.

Jun 29, 2007 10:11 pm I like the mix, Rob. The bass and kick levels are just fine to my taste, but younger folk might like it a bit louder. Overall good sound.

Jun 29, 2007 10:53 pm Thanks Herb! & Tears!
Most appreciated!
Jun 29, 2007 11:41 pm it's not a matter of loudness herb, i just would like to be able to properly hear all notes of the bass line, not overpowering, just there. it's the backbone of the melody, and i like to be able to follow it. the mix was very nice, and i enjoyed vc's song very much, but in the interest of constructive crit, ya know. i guess i just don't want to be misunderstood, overpowering bass is horrible, for ones much younger and sillier than i.
peace.

Jun 30, 2007 09:11 am Jen are you just listening to the song via PC speakers?
On heavy stuff like this I tend to produce/engineer the relationship of the bass and electric guitars to flow as one and I really dont seek a separate space so to speak (to a point) for each to be so defined apart from each other. I hear what your saying though and when I listen to Rush's "Snakes & Arrows" I want to hear that Rickenbacker that Geddy used to play for the very reason of having the bass notes super defined and cutting through the mix.
I do struggle a little with bass guitar sounds and getting that really tight but yet full powerful sound that I hear in my head. One of these days I'll get it! :))
On three separate playback systems that I use the bass sound is "there" albeit its not to the same degree on each one.
SO I guess what I am saying is that I agree with you and your critique! :)) hahaha
Thanks so much for checking it out! I do value the input!
Jun 30, 2007 11:30 am yeah, on monitor speakers, but i do subscribe to the "if it sounds good on crap, it'll sound good on anything philosophy" however good it sounds on car stereo, won't have universal appeal unless it sounds good on everything.so, um, yeah, i'm working on that too, and will wish us both good luck
peace.

Jun 30, 2007 11:47 am I'm something of an antique radio buff. There are no AM stations in my area that play music anymore, so I'm planning on buying a low-power AM transmitter (less than 1 watt output and legal) so I can listen to music through my old sets.
Then I'm gonna test all of my mixes with my 1931 Philco.

Jul 01, 2007 03:41 pm Hey Rob, finally got a chance to listen a little better here. Just went right to guitarist works and used their player which I think was better then the WinAmp player set up I'm using right now. On my rig the bass was not over ridden by the guitars at all. I found the snap of the snare a tiny bit much but nothing to toss a mix out over. I thought the vox were well placed and had a very powerful feel to them.

Jul 03, 2007 11:49 pm Cool! Thanks noize for taking the time! Glad to see its going over well for most folks!
I'm most appreciative of everyones comments for sure!
Jul 04, 2007 10:52 am herb-that's awesome! if you like am radio a lot, maybe try ham radio sites to get better receivers. my buddy at work is really into it, he can listen to stations from ANYWHERE.
peace.

Jul 04, 2007 11:43 am I've considered getting into HAM a few times, seems fun, shortwave radio and whatnot, hearing things from all over, seems cool.
Jul 05, 2007 05:16 pm Nice vocals! Really nice vocals! Who's the lead vocalist? What kind of a track are you planning to add with keys? Lead guitar was awesome! Is that you? Really enjoyed this!

Jul 05, 2007 09:56 pm Yes Dung thats me on the geeter doin my best to impersonate someone that can play! :))
The vocalist is Shane Lankford who is also in a band called Orphan Project. He is a monster talent for sure.
WYD...no real secrets seriously, Just well mixed multitracks and even compression settings. Shane just has a naturally evenly powerful vocal range that doesnt need a ton of eq'ing and or wild compression. Believe me bro I'm not holdin out on ya :))

Jul 09, 2007 06:48 pm Yep, if you listen enough you can tell he has just got one of those voices. He is that once in a lifetime type vocalist that seems to have a great range and hits it pretty much on the mark all the time. All the music I have that he has sang on is like that. A very distinctive vocal sound that is perfect for the music Rob is writing.

Jul 22, 2007 05:06 pm WOW!
That really added some body to it. I liked it very much as it was, but that really added some nice undertones.
Did you do anything with the bass on this track? It sounds fuller now for some reason and I'm just wondering if it was just me. I think so far this might be my favorite track of the ones that I have heard. It really rocks and flows nicely. I like the way the end just rings out ever so slightly, hopefully that won't get wacked out in mastering.

Jul 22, 2007 05:27 pm Nope n2u nothing is getting wacked,,,It is mastered and DONE! Time to abandon it! ;)
I did mess around with one or two cuts to tighten up the bass but not a ton. I guess it was the right amount! :)
Seriously Noize this track is the weakest of the bunch...the other 3 vocal rockers are even better in my opinion.
Shane now has all the music for the vocal tracks we are now off an running on the remaining 4 instrumentals!
Thanks again n2u and T63 !

Jul 22, 2007 05:51 pm Well, if this is the weakest then I can't wait for the full album to come out. Not saying I didn't completely think the others rocked that you have posted so far, but this one just grabbed me for some odd reason.
