hi everyone, im andy, im new. hello.

right heres the dilema -

ive got this new shiny laptop, cool edit on it, and im looking to record some tunage. i have my behringher PA setup in the room, mic's into lines 1-8, cd player into 10, ipod into 11, speakon cables to the speakers, all hunky dory, no mad noises, all working fine. however, ive got stereo 1/4" cable going out of my left and right main sockets and into the inbuilt laptop sound card line in/ mic. again, no real problems there, but when i go to record i get the sound fine, when i play back i get a mad interference type sound, oh wise ukmusic forum, why is this, can it be that the soudcard's $$$$, the desk's buggered or something else more sinister alltogether

help, i beg of you, it's grinding my gears.

andy.

are you playing it back through the PA?

You can't plug line level signal (coming out your pa board) into the mic input on your laptop.

I'm guessing you have two inputs, one says line in, and the other says mic. Don't use the mic, only use the line in.

Also, the line in may have 2 channels on it (left and right) so if you got an adapter, to go from the 2 plugs on your PA board, and converts down to a stereo 1/8" jack, then you can keep left side separate from the right side.

That's my guess so far, anyway =).

Welcome to the boards, too!

Too add, the soundcard will be a weak link in the chain. The converters will be low-quality, so stepping up to a recording type interface will make you sound better =).

There's some pretty decent firewire and USB offerings out there, that are two channel. There's also ones that are more channels, and on mixer boards too, so there's some options.

Maybe burn a CD of the wav file and see if the noise is on it or not (play it on your house stereo). This will help you determine whether it is recording the noise or not. If the noise is on the file then you know that it has something to do with the input. If not then it is just the way you are monitoring.

ok and are you monitoring out of the PA when you record?

i'm gonna guess yes...you've got a feedback loop...what's happening is your sound is gooing out of the computer, into the mixer then out of the mixer back into the computer....

try disconnecting you're computer's "line out" that's gooin' to the mixer durring recording, i bet it stops.

yeah thats what i want to do, how can i resolve it mate?

without the monitoring of the playback the setup is-

mic to mixer mixer mon out into sound card. now i wat to o out of sound card into mixer, how do i stop this 'orrible sound?

the soud occurs anytime the mixer is plugged into the s/c headphone jack.

yeah...you want to be sure you hook up the computer's output into the mixer's "Tape In"...it'll be an RCA jack...this does not send audio back into the computer.

when anything other than the computer, ie. ipod or CD player are plugged into the tape in, it works fine.....

ok if you're running a headphone output into the tape in (line in) then that could possibly be contributing....try to keep the headphone volume at about 50-60% for the best signal to noize ratio....crankin' it up will cause distortion, and too low will make noize relatively louder.

I am new to this issue/thread, but have you listened thru the laptop speakers and the PA and found bad sound in both? If so, I'd say your built in sound card just sucks, which is often the case with integrated sound devices. Integrated ones are usually designed for gaming and music/DVD playback, not recording. Getting a USB or firewire device would likely be just the ticket to help.

The Line6 UX2 is getting fave reviews on here, though it's only 2 channel. If you can live with that, you'll get a bunch of modeling effects, etc.

100quid, let's see, that's either 1468.45 $ us, or 75 pesos, i can't remember which =).

I think the UX2 will come in under 100q,

pjk, it is $178.53 in US dollars, so yes he should be able to afford a UX-2 with 100 quid.
