Raising amps off the floor

How far? 12"? 36"? 2"?

Is it to prevent transmitting sound to the floor? Or is it to allow wave propagation?

Lifting it off the floor stops/minimizes vibration from the cabinet from transmitting thru the floor and throwing off the overall sound I would suspect, if lifted high it could be to get the speakers closer to ear-level as well. The distance off the floor for vibration control doesn't matter, the main goal is to have the least amount of space actually contacting the floor. If you look at monitor isolation stands for your control room, they often have what looks like pins touching the surface of the desk, stands or whatever...thats because a pinpoint touching will transmit less vibration that a square inch of flat surface.

it's not the distnace lifted, it's the square footage of contact between the two surfaces.

Does that make sense.

yeah dB's got it....pickin' it off the floor will roll-off the low's and also make it easier to hear due to beein' at ear level (or closer too)....i generally get guitar cabs off the floor when recording (when possible) but i leave the bass on....playin' live has the same effect, get the cabs up on something, and everyone will hear you better since your sound isn't aimed at everyones knees...which means you don't have to turn it up as loud.

My amp is about 18" off the floor. That just happens to be the height of the speaker box that it is sitting on. I use 2 mics (SM57 and a B1) and have found that by getting it up off the floor it has helped to tame the early reflections from the floor being captured by the B1 which is about 2 feet away from the amp. You can't really tell from this picture but this is a speaker cabinet that I modified with a sub that it is sitting on.

Allright. I've got just the riser device for my amps. I hung my PA spkrs in two corners, and my monitors are at 4' and on 4" styrofoam pads .

I have made a "hard floor" drop in out of 4x4s and 1/2" plywood. It's 4ft x 3ft and I use it to liven up the room a bit by layin it flat or leaning against a wall.

My room has bay window alcoves, and bookcases full in almost every corner. It's pretty dead. That hard floor thing is the only live surface most times. Mostly it stays under my long table out of the way. I like dead for tracking.

Thanks guys.
