Does anyone use a Linux OS at all?

I mean for non-server use.

I'm thinking of having a crack but the amount of distributions is pretty daunting.

I've been keeping partial tabs on the linux train. I've got a red hat 9 box at home for a web dev server, and use fedora core at work for a web server.

I haven't done a ton with desktop platforms, but if I had to choose, I'd probably go with ubuntu, or fedora.

I just read that using the fedora dist, you can get a package in their installer programs, that has most of the audio apps in it. But fedora is like 6 CDs, whereas ubuntu is 1, i think.

I think ubuntu is getting good press from audio people, though I'd have to research more before I actually jumped.

I did install 64studio on my studio box, though on a different HD. It was pretty smooth, but I don't know what I'm doing, so I was pretty lost. I don't have any time right now to swim through a new OS, specially Linux, so I'm staying with XP for now.

When XP wears out, or becomes too outdated, I'm pretty sure I'll be jumping to linux, and making it work. The audio platforms should be pretty stable and usable by then (a few years, I'm thinking).

Oh yeah, I just downloaded the Musix distro a week ago, but haven't even touched it yet. Might be worth a look as well.

I use linux for everything except some video stuff. The office applications are very well established... and I've have hardware that works better on Linux than on XP... like my video card and printer...

For production it's a little weird... some apps are so far above and beyond what you could possibly get commercially while others sit in beta with no momentum.

I think a lot of attention is going to Ubuntu and thats where I would suggest starting... or with fedora for easy use of CCRMA. currently I use Slackware but it can be quite a beast. I'll probably get a ubuntu partition goin in the next month or so once things slow down in landscaping.

I am using Ubuntu. And I'm liking it. Once I got the hang of things it's pretty smooth.

Thanks guys.

I'm just getting sick of Microsoft.

I dont want to jump on the 'MS bash' bandwagon as they make some excellent products for sure.

To be honest there are some really great Features in both XP and Vista.

But i'd like to try a 'Lighter' OS and learn a bit more about Linux as whole.

This looks interesting!

ardour.org/

I'll try and track something in the next week with it.

I'll do a review of the whole process when i'm done!

it'll be interesting to compare it to Cubase/Sonar.

Are you using KDE or Gnome?

The sound server for KDE (arts) doesn't play nice with a lot of things. To get sound in firefox I have to start it with the alsa-oss wrapper which should be included.

aoss firefox

I'm using gnome. I just typed aoss firefox in the terminal and nothing noticible happened.

make sure firefox is completely closed before hand...

then the noticeable thing is that firefox should launch :)

well since my flash would load but not really play, I assumed I needed to reinstall it, so this is what I did:

sudo aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree

then i restarted firefox

then

sudo aptitude install alsa-oss
gksudo gedit /etc/firefox/firefoxrc

and I changed FIREFOX_DSP="none"

to

FIREFOX_DSP="aoss"

however still no working

check to see if it works as root

and/or try:

FIREFOX_DSP="arts"

in any case this seem to be the big thread on the issue:

But hey, to each his own.

okey, downloading the .tar.gz for the latest flash player, and installing it into /usr/lib/mozillia-firefox and then restarting the computer seems to have fixed the problem. I can now watch the videos fine with audio, and xmms is still playing the mp3s... so we'll see how long it lasts ;)

Noize - eh, linux is like leggos, you can go out and buy a premade toy car that does everything as it should right out of the box, or you can buy the leggo set and build the toy car yourself. And when you get bored with the car you can take it apart and make something else.

I get lost in there myself, I find it easier to select inputs and outputs in Ardour instead of Jackconnect. Ardour usually has nothing routed so you have to point all the tracks to the master track, etc. It makes a bit more sense in the mixer-console view.

well when i try to run ardour it says:

Ardour cannont connect to jack etc

then it has an ok button that closes ardour when i hit it

you need to start jack :) It doesn't start automatically.

You might have a qjackctl app in a menu that will allow you to start jack (it has to be 'playing')

or in console

jackd -R -d alsa
(starts jack in realtime mode [may need root or other finagling] using the alsa soundcard driver)

started jack, then sudo'd ardour, got this:

maybe just try not sudoing ardour because I think super user is different from root and JACK wants things to be the same user...so JACK is running as root and ardour is trying to run as su...

Just wanted to add to/resurrect this thread. I'm using Ubuntu Studio right now and loving it. Ardour2 is a huge improvement over previous versions (it's actually usable without having to worry about corrupted projects now). Loki, did you install the low latency kernel and make sure that JACK was actually started (not just running, but configured and started without any xruns)?
