which would be best...

...a small square walk-in closet with carpet padding on the walls and using it as a sound booth? or...

...having a whole room with carpet padding on the walls?

whole room, that closet will resonate at around 300hz and will make your guitar sound 'boomy'....close mike it with a good cardioid mic and find the room's sweet spot (just walk around while playing, you'll hear what i'm talking about, if you have troubble close your eyes and try not to hit anything with the guitar)

certian 'zones' in the room will be more reflective than others.

i've done the closet thing using my head and not my ears, and it was quite the eye opener to learn how nice my living room sounded. once i thought that by hooking up 8 mics to record a single acoustic guitar would give me the sound i wanted, i believe i called it 'super-stereo' at the time. haha all it sounded like was a phaser that was stuck.

The closet idea is generally more convenient and it can be made to work, but typically that small of an area is better suited for doing vocal tracks rather than loud tracks like electric guitar amps and such.
