Very sad.

The gunman was killed, no wasted trial time and beaurocratic BS to go on for him...he's taken himself out of society...sad 20+ others had to too...

I just want to buy a house in the mountains and get the hell out of "civilized society"...cuz it's increasingly NOT.

Uh, yeah, and I work at a college full of so-called "at-risk" students, meaning they don't have a lot of self-esteem, they're quitters, etc..

I see temper tantrums on a regular basis. Let's hold out hope that they don't start bringing weapons...

There are some things that just will never be able to be explained...people that do this kind of a thing are just...I dunno, man, hard to put in to words.

The words I would put it in to would get censored.

What is wrong with our society? How does a person get so messed up that they feel like they have to go and do something like this?

I'm picturing a parent who's watching the TV and still hasn't heard from their kid yet....
I mean, I heard about this when I got home from work, and as soon as my daughter came home from school, I couldn't overcome to urge to hug her.
It's just unbelievable what people are capable of doing to each other.

BBC report suggests it could have been even worse but apparently VT has some fast thinking students... tactically speaking, some of those student were on the ball.

My heart goes out to the family's of everyone involved.

Oh They are just in their teens. So sad, sorry for their parents. Hopefully the shooter is burning in wherever he is right now.

I see the parents watching Leathal Weapon XXX, Die Harder and Harder, etc. from the time the children were born. I see world learders ditching deplomacy and demonstrating power. I see people looking outward and craving more and more sensation. I hear music romanticizing and glorifying violance. I see grade school students in my wife's classroom who know no other means of dealing with life beyond voilance. I see voilance no more exceptional in the american household than a toaster. I see everyone looking out for number one. I see social groups with initiation rituals that include killing another human. I see prison terms that are avenues to climing the ladder in 'business'. I see a lot more of this in our future.

the future is now? looks like it doesn't it?

There was a freshman level language class, and a senior/graduate level civil engineering class that was attacked.

I still can't believe two things:
Nobody rushed him.
And he chained the doors from inside Norris Hall.

Very sad. I heard about it (West Coast) on NPR first thing in the morning. Only one fatality. The father of one of my friends is a professor emeritus there, and her brother works on campus. I called her to let her know. Only later did I hear the true numbers. I started watching on the news last night, but I got too depressed.

NPR ran a little story this morning about a reporter who had been at the Columbine school. At the makeshift memorial she was talking to a lady who was leaving some flowers. The lady said, "We know what to bring."
That's so right on. The Times in London ran the headline - "Only the location and numbers change" - I guess they were commenting on the ridiculous number of such shootings in these times.
My heart goes out to the victims. Senseless deaths. It makes me so angry.

I hadn't heard about the students rushing him. I guess the "let's roll" spirit is still strong.

A sad, sad day.

well the fact you can 'easially' rush someone with a 9mm is something the police have worked hard to keep secret. Thats why MPs complains so much about not having .45s anymore. But in anycase, you still have to get within 10ft in rushing before it's consitered impossible to stop you...and the 'don't show up to a gunfight with a knife' applies.

Personally I probably wouldn't have rushed him unless I knew I had suprise. ...otherwise... rule #1 in an ambush - exit the kill zone as fast as possible.

I don't think anyone rushed him... but a report I read was a class heard the shooting and a girl went to look and was fast enough to close the door when she saw him... other students barracaded the door with desks and layed on the floor to hold it shut and he was shooting though the door at chest level over them.

Yeah, if you have a gun, you better be at least 20' away from the person you want to shoot or they can likely rush you and disarm you before you get the shot off...if the person you are intending to shoot is away and capable...lots of studies have been done on that.

Another Columbine, but worse.Ive heard that two were shot over two hours before the thirty. How come more wasn't done earlier as a precaution?Where were the police/swat teams? The students need protection, this is crazy.

apparently they thought the first one was a domestic dispute and that the gunman left the campus

I don,t think that reason is good enough,I know it's easy to say what should have happened after the event, but with this being another "yet again tragedy" there has to be more response/action, not thoughts.

the media is just...so bad.

fox news is about to bring on a body language expert. to try to glean some insight from a picture where the guy's eyes are closed and he's holding a knife to his throat.

jeez maybe it's just me, but i think the meaning is pretty clear. i don't reeeealy think we need a body language expert to help us tease out the meaning.

our nation's tv is so seriously seriously seriously dumb.

Agreed, they are just trying to fill yet more time with horrible news to keep everybody scared so they keep watching. The news is half the problem in this country, basically making a quasi-celebrity out of people that do these kinds of things...

and they were just talking about how it was eerie that there was no sign what was going on behind this very normal looking door. this, in other words, where was the shooter lived. look at that, in a place just like anyone. wow.

well of course. jeez. people live in places.

the piano music is really getting to me. sad, weepy, engineered. graphics, ready to go.

the pep rally annoyed me as well. everything just seems so fake. people posing, everywhere you look. even the heros. 'i'm just glad i could be there.'

yeah, right. you're not glad you could be there. what's wrong with people? what is wrong with the way people communicate that everything has to be fake drama all the time?

Yeah, basically giving you the "it could happen in your town" trip...

I remember not too long ago a little news spot came on between commercials that said "convicted child molester escapes prison, he could be in your neighborhood, watch at 10 for the details". WTF?!

Media sucks and it's keeping this country divided along racial, religious and social status lines by continually driving home that one hates the other...but they have too, that's where they get their news.

hahaha, love it, now it's your fault the profile didn't work.

I removed the password and email from the profile changes and made them separate forms, yet I didn't remove them from the validation check that makes sure the current visitor is changing only THEIR profile...so the validation was looking for data that wasn't there and getting confused.

Just stupid lack of detail from trying to do too much too fast. Of all the recoding I have done in the last week, the most was in the profile, so the fact a couple bugs pop up isn't too surprising.

Ya knew it would happen, now everybody is reporting that this guy was picked on as a kid...here we go, here come the reasons it wasn't his fault...he was a victim...

Yeah...gotta love the media...

I was picked on pretty severly as a kid most kids were at one time or another, I never shot anyone...I kicked the **** out of one kid, he healed up, but the picking stopped...didn't need to kill anyone.

Yeah, here it turns out dad was right, ya pretty much gotta stand up once good and firm and things are different from there on out.

That may not be the same today, but it certainly was in my day...

Dad was smarter than I gave him credit for back then.

jeez. this is weird. to test readiness for vtech-style problems, two taiwanese politicians took it upon themselves to stage a mock attack without informing anyone.

Yesterday here in Brainerd, MN they were testing a system that calls phone numbers with recorded messages, sends emails and goes over PA systems to alert people of danger, and they accidentally notified the campus there was a shooter and campus was locked down...

Oops!

Can't find a news story about it but I heard it on the radio all day.

heh... seems like accidents like that happen eveery time security system is first tested... when they installed the "emergency pop out of ground concrete pillars" at the entrance of the local base they didn't notice that someone was parked on top of them the first time they tested them.
