Computer Setup for Sonar 6

Hi guys,

I need some help. I am using Sonar 6 but when I try to play a midi track using my controller with a VSTI plugin. There is a lag between me pressing the keys and the sound being produced on my speakers. If i'm just using general midi, I face no such problems (or at least the problem is not so obvious). I have a feeling it has to do with my sound card. Not sure though. Or should I throw in more ram?

My com specs are:
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.8ghz 2x2mb cache
RAM: 1GB
Sound Card: Creative Audigy (The most basic one, value or something.)
Midi Controller: E-MU Xboard 49

Help please! Thanks!

I believe the solution is in checking you latency and making sure it's 11ms or less... I haven't used SONAR since 2.2 so I can't tell you how to check. :)

Hmm.. Thanks for the reply. I've got no idea how to change that also but I'll try later when I get home.

Hope that fixes the problem.

Oh yes, there's something else! Recently, when I've been recording audio tracks, the CPU meter at the bottom of the window often goes into the red zone. My computer is quite new so I don't think that my processor is too slow right?

excessive CPU use should only occur if you are running effects or virtual instruments. So basically if you have a VSTi or DXi intensive song have have two copies of each track... Have one that has the instrument and effects applied and rendered and another that has the same thing but is archived... when you make a change unarchive the track make the adjustment and rerender it to the other track. This will get you the sound without having the CPU overhead.

This may be a silly solution, but it actually worked for me with a my Radium 49 I had for a while...I would have that latency myself on one of my computers if it was running off of USB power...if I plugged it into the wall it wouldn't have the latency...seemingly makes no sense, but I replicated the problem and the fix a few times...

Also, make sure you have the newest drivers for the controller. I use Sonar 6 with my Line 6 KB37 and it works very well.

Hey guys,

I tried some tweaks and I think tweaking the latency made the most difference. Now it's really great though I haven't tested it fully yet. Hope it stays this way. The CPU level is still jumping to around 30%-50% or more and the funny thing is that I'm not even doing any recording. Just trying out different VSTIs for and playing them with my keyboard. It worries me. What if I start piling up the tracks? I'll be in trouble then. Keeping my fingers crossed. Hope it doesn't happen.

Thanks for all your help!

VSTi's can use a lot of memory and processing power if you are using big sample sets and lots of tweaking...try opening a small, simple little synth and see how it compares to opening some of the big system-heavy synths...at least you'll find out where your limits are.

30-50% seems a mite high.

I'd say that's way high.

I'd look at replacing that audigy card. It's a big possibility that it's the cause of high latency, and possibly your higher CPU usage (iffy on the last one).

But 30-50 for just running 1 synth (vsti) seems way too much for a duo core. I'd think around 3-5 is more in line, but I don't have sonar. I'm just giving my .02$us.

I'm going to shoot for the fact it might be a combination of things. Something running in the background is using up system resources and leaving Sonar short on what it needs. But the sound card is a major culprit in latency problems, although I have gotten older SB cards to run pretty decent with beta type drivers. I don't usually recommend third party drivers for use with an audio interface but in the case of the SB I might look at that. OR a different card.

You really should see better performance then that with Sonar 6 and a duo core.

As for background applications running, I always make sure that I end all of them before I do my recordings. So I am pretty sure that this is not a problem.

I'm starting to get the same problems again. Really looking to get a new sound card and maybe add another 2GB of ram. As for sound card, should I get a low end E-MU or one of the mid range X-fi cards? What do you guys think? Will I be wasting my money?
