Sounds like a buffer problem to me, try raising your buffers in audio properties (not sure of Ableton's preferences setup as I have never used it)...maybe it's lowering the buffers, I forget, try both, see if either helps.

Thanks for the reply, i have just tried raising and lowering the audio buffer but didnt really make much difference, its seems to do the same thing when i listen to music through itunes as well, would changing the sample rate help at all?

Interesting...you should fill out your profile, let us know the specs of your PC.

Indeed, most times changing the buffer setting should solve that type of problem. But it can be related to other things in the PC as well. Such as ram or CPU speed. It can also be drivers that are not co-habitating with other bits of the system well.

Hey, I'm having exactly the same problem and so is this guy by the looks of it:

I read somewhere that Intel's SpeedStep and AMD's Cool n Quiet processor technology can cause crackles so I disabled that in the bios which helped a little but not a lot.

But, yeah, as Painty said, seems to be an issue with all audio, be it iTunes, Cubase or even the windows sounds and the buffer size makes very little difference.

I think that the relationship to the Intel or AMD problem though is more related to the Mother Board and such. I have run AMD Cool n Quiet many time while mixing and not had any issues. Even on my last box which was much slower then this one it never made a peep. But it was a high end combination recomended by AMD as the best choice MoBo for the application.

I did a lot of research this time when building this one and it has paid off big time in both noise reduction and processing ability without gliches.

Yeah I think thats true. When I built my PC I did it from more of a gaming point of view so it's not got the best components for this type of thing. There must be a way to at least minimise the issue though

You can try adjusting both the buffer or latency setting in both the interface panel and in the recording application. I know on my old PC I needed to make adjustments in both Sonar and the interface panel.

I dont know if this is related or not, could well be though.

I was reading this article here at home about midi and stuff being out of time after recording during playback.

there were saying something about disabling a "midi filter" in your recording program. In this case it was Cubase but im sure its available on all progs.
They were saying "windows" gets confused when this filter is on as to which midi port it is supposed to be using, subsequently causing drop outs, out of time audio, snaps, crackles and pops, complaints and general pains in the rectumus maximuss etc.

dont know if that rings a bell with anyone here, im only learning about midi at this point so i could a raving maniac.
The article is legit though.
