Not for the faint of heart, this is an absolutely blatant attempt at writing a commercial country song. I wrote it over the weekend and recorded it today (I'm on Spring Break!) It tries to appeal to the sentiments of the redneck that is in all of us. The only thing missing is the usual dose of blind patriotism. In case the metaphor isn't obvious enough, it's about raising kids, not plants.

Lyrics:
Another baby child comes into this world
Maybe mama’s pride and joy, or daddy’s little girl
Someday they’ll be grown up and walk off into the night
And if you want ‘em to come back home
Raise ‘em right
Show ‘em how we say yes, sir, yes ma’am
And let ‘em squirm a little while before you help ‘em out of a jam
Teach ‘em how to pray before they turn out the light
‘Cos if you want ‘em to find their way
Raise ‘em right
And just remember when you plant ‘em don’t you plant ‘em too deep
And don’t forget when they’re older that what you sow you reap
Sprinkle ‘em with love and point ‘em toward the light
And if you want ‘em to grow up tall
Raise ‘em right
(Obligatory Twang)
There’s just too many seeds that never find good soil
And if you never give ‘em what they need they’re only gonna spoil
And then when the harvest comes around it ain’t a pretty sight
So if you want to produce a good yield
Raise ‘em right
And just remember when you plant ‘em don’t you plant ‘em too deep
And don’t forget when they’re older that what you sow you reap
Sprinkle ‘em with love and point ‘em toward the light
And if you want ‘em to grow up tall
Raise ‘em right

Mar 13, 2007 03:00 am Dang that is a great mix Jim! Lyric's are right on. Love the sound of your guitar on this one, you got the twang but it's not thin sounding real nice. The song is strong, and could definitley be on the radio. Nothing wrong IMO trying to write songs with commercial appeal, and I think you've succeeded here and many others you've penned. Great job Jim, keep them coming.
PS I don't have an iPod (or any other such animal) but your on my WMP playlist! ;)

Mar 13, 2007 02:22 pm We just got a country station again here in the bay (format change from awful 80's rockish stuff to country - country stations come and go here, and never more than one). This sounds much more interesting than most of the country on that stationg, but I don't think they'd play this on their station. This has more of an older country feel, not the "new country" that seem to like to play (by the way eff a rascal flats or whatever their name is - garbage). Anyhow I like it. I'd say the vocals could come up a tad in the mix. For most of the song the mix seems to lean left pan wise, except the obligatory twang part which kinda leans right. I might try and pull some of the parts towards the center.
Also, i just want to be clear, I'm not hating on this song, I like it. Any negative sounding comments above are aimed at commercial radio!

Mar 13, 2007 05:37 pm Cool song . Good mix . Great twang !
Just wan'na make sure, though... this is about bringin' kids up, and not growin' pot, right ?
Mar 15, 2007 09:15 pm It's almost got a happy "Children of the Corn" vibe. Without the ritual sacrifice.
My wife is a country fan and loved it.

Mar 18, 2007 05:07 pm Another sweet one Jim! I think I've said this before but I'll say it again, yer voice sometimes reminds me of the young Willy Nelson. Maybe there is a connection there in the name? Anyway, loved the song. A little tinge of new country but more old country feel that kept me interested. Guitar tone was spot on and not too twangy at all, even the solo had a bit more bottom then on most twangy solo parts. You squeezed a damn nice tone out for this one. I'm torn between wanting to hear a little reverb on the vocal or not. I've listened about 5 time's and keep waffling on that one. The piano was the killer touch for me, nice and steady keeping the flo going and driving along like a good rhythm section should.
Anyway, loved the tune once again. Even though I am not a huge country fan you keep me poppin these tunes into the car on my driving mixes.

Oh ya, and I agree that this one is pretty much radio ready as well. Easily would get played on a couple of the country stations up here.
