SoundBlaster Live 24 bit USB - HELP!!!

Hi,

I'm a newbie to this site, so bear with me! I have spent the best part of half a day reading through ALL the posts I can see on this site, trying to find an answer to my question, but I havent as yet, so thought I should post before I tear my hair out!

I realise from reading posts on all forums that creative labs products are far from ideal for recording music. However, buying a new card/device isnt an option.

Basically I have a USB soundblaster live 24bit card and I just cannot get it to record in Sonar or Cubase or Guitar Tracks. I get terrible latency problems in Guitar Tracks and also get poor sound quality (although this is only recently as I have managed to record a decent track with the card). I cant get anything to record in cubase or sonar fullstop.! My preferred option is guitar tracks as I fidn it easier to use and only really want to use the basic facilities such as EQ etc to produce a basic mix for my bands demos.

My main problem is how do I set it up to just record one instrument at a time(say my guitar), while listening to other tracks(say pre-recorded drum track), with minimum latency. I have tried the ASIO for ALL drive and this hasnt solved the problem.

I am going crazy trying to sort this out, I knwo there must be a way but I dont know where to start with all the tweeking and Im sure my tweeking so far has caused extra problems!

I have an Acer laptop with Realtec onboard sound, I use my usb creative card for recording. laptop has 1GB ram, and 1.6Gz processsor.

Please please help, I have done computer recording before on a desktop with no issues, it seems that its the USB that is causing me issues, has anyone out there had similar issues and found a way round them somehow?

A very basic description from start to finish of what I should do to get started would be really useful

Thanks in advance for any advice

Tom

What OS are you using, presumably Windows XP? What driver type are you selecting? Have you tried ASIO4ALL drivers?

Im using XP, and I've tried ASIO4ALL. I have a couple issues really. One is the latency issue, as there is a very slight delay between what I play and what i hear. This appears to also be causing the tracks to be out of sync when I play them back. he second issue is that I now cannot even record a decent quality sound as on playback the track stutters in places, but this wasnt an issue previously so I assume I have doen something to cause this.

Can I ask a basic question.. If I recorded my guitar in a generic suond recording program that came with the soundcard and then imported this track into guitar tracks and tried to record vocal over this, singing perfectly in time. Would there be some timing issue that would cause the two tracks to play out of sync?

sounds like, not to sound cocky or offensive, the typical issues associated with a sub-standard recording card that simply can't keep up to the task.

You dont sound cocky, just speaking the truth I guess!

But I am convinced thre must be a way around this problem, if I only knew what I was doing and could sort it out!

At this stage I want to try and sort it out before I resort to anything else. So any general tips/advice/hints etc that can be given to guid eme in the right direction would be really useful, and probably stop me making thinsg any worse!

Well, there likely is a way around, many folks use soundblasters for recording, it's just often a pain to set up...I would suggest playing with your buffers a little in the app...raise them, lower them, play around, see if it help. buffers can help a lot, though I am no expert as I have never needed to do it myself.

I just hope someone out there uses creative soundblasters and can help me. I have used them before, many years ago and had no problem, Im sure there is a way.

I have tried the buffer adustments but I will start afresh and give it another go.

Thanks again.

I know not about cubase, but do they have a dynamic latency adjustment (drift correction) in that software?

I have also recorded with SB stuff (Awe64) years ago and had no problems. Every piece of software I have used has some sort of latency correction though.

I don't know the programs you are using at all. But generally, there is a buffer and seperate latency settings that are adjustable. I would play with these things first.

SBs are quite capable of recording, but you may also have a problem because the soundcard is USB, and if it's not USB 2.0, there may be a case of the data bottlenecking at the USB connection. I've recorded plenty of stuff on an SBLive (PCI)back in the day and never had a problem.

I was thinking along the lines of the USB being the problem, as I've never experienced this with on-board cars before. I have used a delta-44 previously in an old desktop but just wanted a cheap option for my laptop.

I have tried fiddling with the buffers etc and at one point I thought I had the latency down to a minimum but then the whole lot crashed on me so I will start again.

Does anyone know if there are issues with importing audio into say cubase as a backing track and then recording another track say vocals alongside it, would the timing stay in or would there be issues because the backing track was recorded in another piece of software?

Also, I have learnt that the creative USB card i am using is USB 2.0, so assuming that my laptop is USB 1.0, is there anyway of changing this cheaply and easily.

Thanks again guys

Sorry for second post in a row but...

Is there a way of telling from my laptop whether it is usb 1.1 or usb 2.0 - assuming it isnt written in the paper version of the spec.

Fingers crossed that it is usb 1.1 and that usb 2.0 will solve my problem!

Hi,

I'm also having the same problem as you and I have the Soundblaster 24 Live PCI card.

I also have a soundblaster card, and after many days trying to get the MIDI to work, I found out that there is a problem between Cubase and Soundblaster. In order to cure the problem, you have to go to creative.com and download a 43Mb update for the soundcard. I forgot the name of it, but if you go to creative.com, and use the "Auto-update" feature, it will come up as a "critical" update, and is 43Mb long. After install in this update, it works fine.

Hi Tom.. I hope you have solved your problem, anyway on the SB Live by default the recording is set to "what you hear" to record only one instrument with mic/line-in you have to chose that as record input.
