I just had to share my weekends session with y'as . For those of you who know about theWents film endeavors, you'll understand the weirdness of the lyrics . This song is going to be used in the film to spotlight Santas evil elves, in particular one named Henry .(good elf name, eh ?)
There are some spaces left in the mix for some solos and noises, etc... and the vocal line will be done by an actual elf(not an 'evil' one)... when the time comes .(ie... after we find one that doesn't have a rider that asks for round trip air fare, zeesh !)
Enjoy !

Jan 09, 2007 07:59 pm heh Thanks coolo !
One thing I learned when getting the guitar sound was this neat little preamp adjustment that I've managed to overlook for the last five years... in the Roland COSM guitar pres, there is an 'output adjustment' at the bottom of the preamp sections of each amp-model . Y'a get a choice of low, med, or high . No gain changes were needed, from my original sound if I simply chose the 'Low' output . All the gate-breathing from the high gain dissappeared... nice .
The result is one chunky-*** mono track on this recording . No doublin' there at all .
Jan 09, 2007 08:30 pm Well, I think coolo summed it up nicely...bizarre!
The opening snare roll and guitar riff reminds me a lot of the song "Scottish Tea" by the Amboy Dukes...not sure if you've ever heard that one, it's very similar. That's a good thing, too...I love that song.
Nice job.

Jan 09, 2007 09:20 pm Hue, that is one interesting and yes, bizarre piece of music. I love the synthetic Ah's that are going on. Bery friggin evel indeed. Henry sounds like one PO's elf. This make me want to see the film even more now.
And I must agree with thermocaster on the Amboy Dukes comparison. It really does indeed bring that memory back strongly. Which as stated above is a good thing.

Jan 09, 2007 10:02 pm Thanks guys . Yes, it is bizarre, but that's theWent for y'a . I think the final version will actually be WAY over the top, comparatively, but fitting for the film .
The snare was mic'd with a LCD(mk-219) about 24" above it . The snare had a very loud over-ring to it, but I got it to dissappear by placing a swatch of very thin nylon silk-like cloth over it... I got lucky first try, as it didn't change the sound at all... just took the ring out .
This is also the first time I used preamp-distortion on a vocal line... tried it just for fun, as these vocals will be replaced with actual elven-vox when the 'lil punk signs .
Noize... there were no synths used at all . The Ahs were recorded by Brent singing into the LCD, heavily effected, and then turned into a groove clip... the snare was also groove-clipped . Sonar RULES .

Jan 09, 2007 11:20 pm The plot is insane... Santa is sent out to get some milk by Mrs. Claus, and acidentally flies his sled through a nuclear bomb test, killing all of his reindeer, which really pisses him off .(hints that he was a little 'too close' to the deer) So with his new found nuclear-powered x-mas power ray, he exacts his revenge on all of mankind . In the process, he meets the Martians, then he decides to steal their spaceship from as means of conquering the rest of the solar system . There's all sorts of small scenes that are simply ridiculous to say the least .
If you want to see some preliminary clips...

... release is still quite far off .

Jan 09, 2007 11:50 pm Claymation ? No . He picks out films that are under public domain, then rewrites the plot, and re-records the audio, and adds effects and such to support the new plot . To be honest, I don't know how he manages to sit through the initial viewing of some of the films he's working on... terrible films ! This one was actually born from the film "Santa Conquers The Martians", forgodsake .

Jan 10, 2007 08:34 pm Thanks for the listen, Cap'n . I can't wait to get back into the studio for some more work on this puppy !
Coolo, there's another clip pasted on the Blue Book myspace that had a real fun voice-over session for it . The one with the jet pilot .
Those preliminary clips are really the lesser of the ones he has finished... some of the stuff he's doing now is pretty impressive... like, the christmas power ray... he filmed one of those 'eye of the storm' lamps, and double exposed it over the stock footage while manipulating the possition of the 'power ray' with his finger... kind of like sculpting the film with his hands, so to say . I thought that was just a bit cool .

Jan 15, 2007 05:08 pm Yeah, 'overthetop'... deffinately overthefriggintop . Lots'a pitch-shifting going on .
After all these years, I'm just now starting to wonder just how far 'off' theWent really is... that's pretty bad considering the source of the wondering .
The lyrics have been changed a bit... the elf we got to do the tracks insisted . : p
Hi ! I'm Henry .(all elves are named Henry)
I am one of the many
Elves in Santas horde
You'll be learning
Once the cities are burning
All must conform
Then we'll be happy
(when)Every day is Christmas
Everyday is Christmas...
Oh, and I must've missed a node, or something, as the song is actually only 2:fortysomething, and it plays-on silently for a couple of minutes after it ends .(?)
Dealing with all the midrange, I may have fried the mix . Please let me know what y'a think .

Jan 17, 2007 11:54 pm After a few listens on different speakers, I noticed there's a bit of a 'swell' in the low end at the end of the guitar phrases . It sounds like I might have to put the guitars in a different room than the rest of the mix, and roll off the bass a bit for that room .
Or perhaps it's a compression-attack issue... hmmm...
Jan 18, 2007 07:22 pm Dude....that is CRAZY!!
My wife and daughter were in the computer room, and their eyes both bugged simultaneously.
GREAT.

Jan 18, 2007 09:42 pm OK, i had to listen on the quiet side but will give it a louder better listen tomorrow after work. I like the treatment of the new elf voice, that is as sick and twisted as ever, at least at low volume. I'm afraid to turn it up, what will the neighbors think.
