Ok, so I finally sat down with the Rode K2 and my $100 classical guitar, I wrote a song called "Makes no sense". Please take a listen. It's short, sweet and an equipment trial run that ended up in a pretty cool piece of spanish shreddiness, hah!

Thanks in advance,

CptTripps

P.S. Bear with me, I have no auto-tune :)

Nice one, man ! I like the brick-wall crescendos that you incorporate throughout the piece . Very smooth playing going on in there... that 100$ cat gut sounds just fine . ; ) You deffinately have a style in your writing, that I can't put my finger on . Once again Cap'n, veddy nice !

I've heard nothing but good things about the K2, and it seems they are true . Sounds warm, but not too warm, clear but not edgy... deffinately not sterile, as it seems to lend a bit of character/color . I'm not sure it's a mic for 'every' vocal or acoustic track being as warm as it is, but deffinately one of the first ones to think of when selecting .

Right on, thanks Hue!!! On the warmness though, I sang very softly and was pretty close (and carefull), if you step back even just a few inches (about where your pop-filter would normally be) you could get a whole different sound.

Thanks again!!

p.s. what is a brick wall crescendo, or even a crescendo for that matter :)?

I was refering to the build-ups that seem to 'appear' in places throughout the song .

heh, Yeah, it's not like they're out of place or anything, but they do kind of appear and then disappear, and then it's on with the theme again . I like it !

Yep, gotta agree with Hue. I found it interesting to say the least, wishing it was a bit longer. I had to listen a little on the quiet side so I'm gonna give it another listen louder tomorrow as it sounds like it should be turned up to get a good grip, so I will.

I don't know why you think the vocal is in need of autotune as the harmony thing you have going makes it sound very cool at the volume I listened at tonight. I'm with Hue on the guitar playing though. There is some very cool little licks in there that just seem to creep up and touch you quickly and then disappear only to return a short while later.

I'll give it another go tomorrow and let ya know how it sounds louder. Actually it sounds like something I might play on the big speaker's in here.

Hey Cap'n... if ye can find yerself a wee lass, wit a VERY heevy celtic accent and a keen lyrical sense, yu'd be on the path to riches fer certan wit this 'un lad . ; p

Seriously though, the rhythm, chord phrasing, and vocal lines you wrote would do quite well with a female voice in that mix . I don't know why I hear stuff like this in other's music... though, it usually comes in the form of horns... bah, today, it's Irish women ! I dun'no... just thought I'd share my hallucinations/vision(olto) .

Cool tune... sixth listen... play it loud, Noise .

Right on Noize, thx for the input.

On song structure, I basically just made a riff that had a little build up, I knew I'd want to solo a tad so I just did each three times. Once I got done soloing I could hear in my head the low toned backups so I recorded them. When that was done I heard a vocal line also and recorded again. So really it was never written as a song, more of a tech demo that turned out cool.

After feedback though I'm thinking I should probably just go ahead and write more to it and structure it a little better.

And OMG Hue, the celtic female thing! We have a local girl named Crystal Hutchens who is an acoustic act with a similar sound to the Cranberry's vocalwise. She liked the song and wanted to use it in a film she is doing. Maybe she'd also be interested in stepping in for a few takes!!

P.S. On the auto-tune, I am a 100% critical of my own work and will never be pleased :( It drives my wife nuts.

Wow... cool ! Hell yeah ! Give it a whirl ! There's just something about that song that screams for that accent... I think it lies within the rhythm line, but the flow of the 'spanish shreddiness' lends for a femanine-liquidity of a vocal, if you will . Keep it in the original structure, though... that's too killer to mess with... especially the background stuff you did !

I don't hear a need for any... how you say... "auto-toon" .

Hue!!!!!!! I hear the Celtic bit but the gypsy feel is really coming out as I play it louder for the 10th time. OK, Celtic Nomadic Gypsy's. Dancing around the fire in the circle of finely crafted elaborately decorated horse drawn trailers. I'm talking old style stuff here. The video keeps playing in my head and gets clearer the more I listen. Several fancily dressed gypsy girls dancing to the music.

Don't change the way it is sung or played as it carries a wonderful visual feel to it the way it is.

Well, Noize has the video covered . ; p

I think if you could come up with some killer lyrics that would change it from "Makes No Sense", into "Makes All Sorts Of Sense To A Female Celtic Singer/Songwriter", you'd have a much better chance of gettin 'er in for a session or two...

Or, maybe that's something that you'd feel more comfortable with sharing with the artist... a colaboration of sorts ? Deffinately a piece you'd think she'd be interested in being a part of . It's all about how far you want to take this one, 'cause it really does have potential .

Well beings I was trying to sing like a woman anywys, maybe she'd write the lyrics (I'm a piss poor lyricist) and sing em while I just do guitars. Once again, thanks for the input, I'll let you know how it goes.

p.s. Are the dancing gypsies naked in your head? Cause they are in mine.

Damn !

See that Noise, y'a just lost the video-gig !

Y'a should'a said something along the lines of...

[sleezyproducervoice]"Yes of course there'll be full-frontal... they're quite lovely, and very committed ." .[/sleezyproducervoice]

Then, after filming and producing *both* versions, y'a give up the one that is most marketable, and keep the other one a secret... for 10 years, or so .

Man... what am I sapposed to do with these 'quite lovely and very committed' dancers now ? They're not going to like this .

I think it's an excellent song even if you don't get an Irish babe to sing it. :D Guitars sound great as do your vocals, very cool!

Give me a couple days. If I can't get some cooler lyrics and perhaps extend it out a bit (a solo without vox over top?) then I'll just leave it as is and set it for download. I do enjoy the feel of this song more so than alot of other stuff I do and just want to make sure I don't break it.

Thanks again guys, I wish I had yall close and snuggly like when writing. I am always impressed with your songs and I think a collab could turn out quite amazing.

yeah, i like this alot too. I like how the vocals came out, the texture is nice and smooth. No need for auto tuning either. Guitar is great! I want to sample it and throw hip hop drums under it, I'm just saying...

very nice!

Actually coolo, that sounds very.... cool. Once again though, I'd wait a couple days to see if I can fix the lyrics. Then I could post a copy without vox and one with em and make them both downloadable. I would be very interested to see what some of yall midi/synth folks could come up with.

COLLAB!!!

Oh yeah, this would totally do well in a berakbeat context ! If y'a feel the need for any hand-drum clips, lem'me know, I'll be cleaning up the studio this weekend, and that always gets me itching to do something .

Hue, ya they were naked, in the end anyway. I was going to go into detail about the... never mind, this is a family forum. I didn't want to sound like a pervert ya know! :-)

Indeed Tripps, I will be popping that one in the player as well. Actually add it to the HRC mp3 disc for the car.
