So I have a Roland VS-880EX that im recording with but I'd like to edit the mix on my computer. I have a Midi converter and I have Sony Sound Forge but do I need a program to get the tracks seperately recorded on to my computer?

ya need to burn a data cd (if capable) of the individual .wav files then load them into sound forge....if no cd burner ya might be in trouble and you'll have to play each track individually and record them into the computer one or two at a time.....that's how i did it with my 1680.

Depending on the version of SoundForge it is only a two track editer. So doing multi track with it would be out. There are several freeware apps out there that would work good for that kind of thing. Unless you have the cash to spend on some like Sonar Home Studio or the lower end mixing programs.

I know sonar is getting a signal but i cant figure it out. ive been using the vs-880 template, does anybody know if theres more templates you can download or something

You could check out a web site dedicated to the VS range www.vsplanet.com that may help

If you open a new file you will have a bunch of templates to choose from. If your looking for control templates there are tons of them as well.

You need to make sure and arm the track to record, whether its midi or audio you still need to arm the track, and tell it what channel/port to listen to.

Yeah all it came with was a a nomarl template, not the ex. (kinda wish i woulda just got the regular one) and about arming it, thats just the thing it wont let me arm it. Its like the button is inactive.

Um, my version of Sonar 4 PE has about 30 different templates to choose from.

But the arming thing, do you have an active and selected midi input port? It sounds like you don't have one yet active in Sonar.

Another thing to look at is do you actually have a midi track created or are you trying to record midi to an audio track? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I know folks who have done tried it.

i'm confused....are you tryin' to get audio (guitar, bass, microphones ect.) from the 880 to the computer, or MIDI data (synth, note on/off) to the computer....i'm not sure if the 880 has a midi sequencer on it....although it DOES have midi i/o.....

Yes, either the digital outs or the analog outs. That is why you will need a multi track program if you want to edit all the tracks as individual parts. Otherwise you will just be exporting 2 tracks or a final stereo mix.
