Beginner with a few questions...

I am just starting to get into recording and I have a few general questions that maybe some of you can help me with. Lets say you have 24 tracks in your PC and you want to bring all these tracks back to analog to mix. Do you need a converter that has 24ins ad 24outs or a converter that equals up to that many i/o.(for example: 3 delta 1010's) If, lets say I record only 8 mics at a time(drumkit) and then overdub every other part of the band,do I only need a converter with 8i/o's. Or will I need more i/o's when i bring them back to analog and for playback? If anyone understands what I am talking about I would really appreciate any information. Also, Ive seen interfaces like the motu 24i, which has 24 trs in's, but wht about the out's. Anyways, I am very confused, and any help would be great. Thanks.

in theory yes, you would need 24 outs, you could do 8 at a time but then you need to make sure they sync up (yikes!). This is a rather daunting task, why do you not want to just mix them down in the digital domain they are already in?

However, if you can get some sort of mixdown unit that has USB or something you could dump them down via that bus...of course most every one of those units are digital DAW's so then you aren't getting it back a analog anyway...hmmmmm...

AS dB said, mixing them down in the digital domain would be a much easier task. But you can fly them out to analog if you must. I would assume if you know someone with a 24 track tape machine then they should have a sync box that will lock up to your digital recorder. If that is the case, then you can fly them out one track at a time if you need to. The analog recorder will have to have one tracked striped with time code and then the sync box should be set so it is the timing master. Then your digital recorder will play back in time with the tape machine and the track's will all sync up. You must make sure and mute the track or track's you don't want recorded at that time.

Brett, it sounds like you are going for the setup I have in my studio.

I currently have 3 Delta410 sound cards which offer 8x3 (24) outputs and 2x3 (6) inputs - these are connected to the 24 channels on my Soundcraft LX-7 and the 6 soundcards inputs are connected to the Auxilary sends (or you could just as easily send them to the 5 busses this desk offers)

This allows me to mix on 100mm faders - the final mix can then be thrown back into the PC for mastering / CD queing via 2 channels.

Hope this helps.
