Best field recording unit?

I am looking for a digital recording device, that will hopefully double as a digital music player, radio ro whatever...

I am currently looking at the Creative Labs Zen, but it appears they have no microphone jack. I want something solid state, no moving disc like a mini disc.

Anyone have any good advice?

Yes I do. I'll try and post a couple fo them up tommorrow after I deal with you know who and get that mess straightened out.

Do you want one with built in mic/mics as well as the ability to plug a mic in I assume? There are several good ones out now with onboard memory or that use removable memory cards. The Zen is cool but not worth the money. I looked at it to replace the Sony but as you stated it didn't meet my need for using mic's both mono and stereo.

The Philps Go Gear one has mp3 player/voice recorder/FMradio and a line-in... with expandable memory . That's the one I went with, and it rocks .

Edit: It's the 'lil red one... I forget the model # .

I have looked in to that Philips device and a few others from them, they look good, but say nothing of inputs...I like the prices too, a bit lower than the Zen.

Here is one from M-Audio I checked out when it was first released. I dont think it had onboard mics though, that is the downside of this one. www.m-audio.com/products/...k2496-main.html
It has the ability to do phantom power as well as normal mics through the 1/4" jacks. The sound was very good in quality when I tried it.

The Edirol R09 however does have built in condenser mics. www.rolandus.com/products...mp;ParentId=114
It does have a mic/line input but I dont believe it will do phantom power for the mic input. Its about the same price as the Microtrak.

Both will allow connection and export via USB for dragging to the PC. These two are the most popular units out at the moment from what I have seen.

I forgot to add, both units are available for around $399.00. That seems to be the going rate, although I didn't do a search for the best price on em.

Jeezuz, per translation, 16,820.00EUR is about $18,000 I think.

Well, nice idea flame, but, probably not until our project REALLY hits it big.

I just joined specially to reply to this thread, ihp-100 costs nothing and has a battery that lasts about 12 hours, built-in microphone, amplified microphone jack, line in, high-quality jacks, wav recording, also doubles up as an a Nintendo emulator if you use to rockbox with it-only drawback is that you can't sample with the internal microphone because the hard drive whizzes -it's still great for diaries-lectures-inside the box but that's not audible really from more than a couple of feet in fact it's pretty much any audible when you stick your ear on it. But it is very good quality love to hear about some solid-state alternatives that mach up to it.

Hey dB, this one has everything you are looking for as well. It was in the new BSW catalog for $299.00. I'm sure it will get cheaper. Here is the link to the direct info.

I know, I made the mistake of telling the other half I was thinking about switching from the MD to that. OF course I got the "What the **** for???"
