Optical input for extra 8 channels?

Ok, so I have a Layla 24/96.

It has 8 analog inputs via 1/4" which I send from my ART mixer for the pre-amps.

It also has a digital input which can be SPDIF (stereo) or Optical (another 8 inputs).

I am looking on getting a pre-amp that has optical out so I can utilize the 8 digital channels.

What I'd like to know, is there a specification I should be looking for or will any 8 channel pre with optical out work for me?

I am looking at the Presonus Digimax line of pre's as they all seem to have this capability but I'm wondering if anyone uses this type of connection and if there is something particular I should be looking for.

in order for it to be 8 channels it's gotta be "ADAT" if it just says optical out, it's SPDIF which is only two channels.

roger that, actual fiber optic or "lightpipe" as they were calling it.

I have fiber optic adat in, so any fiber optic adat out would work aye?

I use this:

www.behringer.com/ADA8000/index.cfm

with great results. It gives my Fostex vf-16 eight more simultaneous channels.

Cool, it will be very nice to actually use all functions of my interface and have 16 channels. I'm extremely excited.

Although I must say, using the recorderman technique. I mic'd the kick, the snare, had 2 OH's and 1 room mic. We played live for about 3 hours and I was amazed at how well the 3 condensers captured the guitar and bass along with the drums. I did have the guitar\bass running direct also but even muted the recordings sounded great using just 5 mics.

When I do a recording like that I run guitar and bass direct (only direct) and run them over headphones so they don't bleed in the drum mikes. Then, after the drum tracks are all done I redo bass if necessary (sometimes that first take sounds good) and then redo the guitar...keeps everything nice and separated.

Hehe, I indeed wanted to do that, but I only have two sets of headphones :) If I would have had a 3rd set that would have been ideal since my line6 is direct out also.

But yeah, we were just recording jams because I always forget something really cool I played about 15 minutes later.
