frequency question

Anyone know what the typical range of frequencies are for a baritone vocalist? My teacher told me a few weeks ago, but I do not remember his answer.

I suggested 2-4 khz, and he said "that's too broad" then hit me with a number around 3000.
I know it really just depends on the singer in question, but does anyone know what number he could have said? 3300hz rings a bell, but I'm not entirely sure.

Just finished doing the vocals on a demo song of mine, and I'd like to take a good chunk out of the guitars and synth to make room for my voice.

www.har-bal.com/frequency.php

according to this it's roughly 70hz-1khz

i'd go a step further and say some can sing as high as 4 or 5k

so a baritone would be in the bottom half of this.

Interesting. He was way off :/ Unless he said 300hz.

According to wiki, the range of a Baritone is 97.9989(G2) Hz - 329.628(E4)Hz

it's also my understanding that western tuning has changed... I can't remember the specifics ... but on old pieces A (below middle C) isn't 220hz, etc... also in the pre-"amplification" age (a la mozart, etc.) a lead instrument whould mistune higher as it increased the precieved loudness and cut though better... I'm not sure if the same techniques ever applied to vocalists though...

If you're using software that has "noise profiling" like Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition, you can use a sample of your voice to get a profile, then apply that profile to the guitar track. This will remove all frequencies in your voice from the guitar. For the profile, I recommend singing a scale of the notes you sing in the song, without any "s" sounds or consonant sounds. Good luck!

:O ! I never knew such a thing existed. I'm using Cool Edit, so I'll look for that tool. Thanks!

Edit: Okay, that was awesome. Took a sample, then decreased the guitars by 2db of the used sample. Worked like a charm. :D!!! That was clever, thanks :)

Wow that sounds like a good idea...I've never heard of that before. Drizzt, did it sound like the guitars were lacking anything after you did that?
