Spiral - retake with scratch vocals

Hey all,

Well we are finally moving forward with some of our songs. This song Spiral, now has a new drum track and we changed it up a bit (actaully it is completely redone although we are still not finished). The vocals are just scratch right now waiting for our singer to do his thing. Don and I don't normally sing but in this case we wanted to lay down the idea we had for a melody.

I'd really like to hear what you all think. I have uploaded the song to my profile but you can also access it from the link below.

Thanks,
Lonnie

Had a quick listen tonight. The vox dont sound too bad for a scratch track really. They sit well in the mix anyway. I dont know why but the stream from guitarist works will only play in WinAmp. Not sure why though. But that player is a little brighter then medai player. But the mix sounds very bright, all the brass stands out and the guitars really have snap, as do the rest of the drums.

I'm gonna try and reset my options in media player to see if I can get it to play in that. But I'll be ginving it another listen and let ya know if I hear anything differant.

OH ya, great rockin tune by the way.

Hey Noise,

Thx for the listen. Strange about the WinAmp thing... works in WMP for me but it could have some strange extension and I don't have WinAmp installed.

Anyways, the biggest thing about this song is that I think we have finally got the drums to come out ok. That has been a struggle. There are some slight timing issues in the bridge and outro but the real intent was to see what people think of the tune itself. Things like the melody and structure. Still some work to do but I thought I would post it anyways.

There is a copy of it in my profile as well and I must say not all players are the same that is for sure.

One other thing, the acoustic is just a modeller and it will be replaced with a Martin so that part will be brought more in the mix. It was added as an after thought but I like the idea its just a little too thin for my liking.

As for the vox, well Don and I don't usually sing so this is a first for us. Haha, great if it sounds ok but the final version will be sung by our lead singer.

Once again, thanks for the listen and the comments.

Indeed as I stated. I liked the tune and arrangement very well. I thought everything seemed well placed as far as structure went, so I think you well set up there. Ya, I noticed you said it was in your profile as well. I just clicked the link and away it went. I use WinAmp for some formats that WMP doesnt do, and for some odd reason once in awhile it will just grab a stream I would assume WMP should have grabbed and then I cant get it to switch back untill reboot. Love the player as it will run FLAC and such which WMP wont do, but dang, it just flakes like that once in awhile.

Great tune, arrangement is great and the tune rocks real nice. I really love the tone on that intro guitar also, it's all smooth... and silky... Also, the vox (as noize said) are quite good for scratch, nice voice too.

Anyway, what I noticed. During the cleaner mellow parts, all elements blend well and the levels seem quite good. But when the heavier guitars come in, I think they are a tad too loud, when combined with the bass track they seem to drown out the kick drum.

Suggestions.. bring down the heavy guitars just bit, then ask one of these guys that actually knows what their talking, which frequency to notch from the bass to carve a sweet spot for your kick.

Ok.. fingers.. tired. Once again, great song!

Cheers

Great song, I agree the heavier guitars are overpowering the rest of the mix a bit, but overall it's a really nice sound. I also agree the vocals aren't bad at all. Love the intro kinda reminds of AC/DC not in a rip-off sense, just a similar style.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to take your suggestions and work on a remix over the next couple days. We may even keep the scratch vocals as they do seem to fit well in the mix. Who would've thought
I'll post the remix once completed.

Hey all, I had a chance to remix and fix a couple of trouble spots. I think it is a lot better but I'll probably redo some parts (vocals mostly).

Here's the link again

Hey I tried to listen to that last link you put up, but yeah, WMP won't open it. Is the version in your profile the most recent?

Yes, I've uploaded it here but I couldn't figure out what the link to the player should be.

I really like the intro.

I'm not really feeling the delay in the left ear in the chorus. Maybe shorten the delay a little bit? or maybe make the panning less extreme? Guitars are mixed well. The stupid headphones i'm listening on have no bass response so I'll hold any comment on low end instruments. Vocals are mostly cool. Actually the more I listen to it, the vocals fit well. Good job.

Sweet, guitars seem much more consistent now when switching from clean to dirty. Once again, a very good song. And those damn leads are very cool.

Sounding pretty good there Lonnie, I think though you probably have the guitars about 3dB or so too high in the mix in comparison to the drums and bass. Nice clear mix though. I really like the song and the guitar tones and playing are great.

Hey Dan,

I have the GTR's double tracked and it is making it difficult to get the volumes correct due to the compounding (or whatever it is called). I'm going to create a bus for the guitars to see if I can get a better overall handle on the levels. Right now I'm dealing with all tracks seperate except for the drums. I probably should have set up a bus structure properly but live and learn I guess.

Have a great weekend,

Aha, that is a tricky one. Last mix I did had 5 guitar tracks (2 riffs dbl tracked and a solo) and yes it was a pain until I made a bus for them all.

Yeah, a buss would make it a lot easier & quicker to dial in the overall level of the guitars. I almost always send guitars, vox, backing vox, to a buss, that way once I have the levels set the way I want them with each other it's simple to adj the overall levels and also saves on effect usage when several tracks get the same effect.

Yep, I will also agree on using busses. When I first switched to a DAW that was the one thing that was missing and I really missed it. But after it was added in it is the biggest time saving tool you can have.
