Are drum mic pack deals actually worth it or are they kinda like those buy a squier and get a little combo amp with it for free deals where it sounds good to someone who doesnt know anything but in reality is a waste. I dont have a huge budget at the time but I would definitly like to step up my drum recordings. Is there any mic pack deals that are pretty cheap and worth it? Are there any brands i should definitly stay away from? Any info would be a huge help. Thanks again guys.
I was thinking about the Audix fusion 6 piece or maybe the Sure PG Piece.
Ive seen companys like CAD and NADY with extremely cheap 7 piece pks but Im thinking they are most likely not too good then.

Mar 21, 2006 12:56 pm i've had really good experiance with the Samson drum pack, you can hear 'em in action in my profile, i don't know too much about the PG series, the PG48 is pretty darn close to a 58 so.....
Earthworks has a bomb-diggity 3 piece set for the price of a quarter horse, and supposedly these three mics are all you need....but yeah lets get back to reality...
i'd look into puttin' together your own kit, i'd go with
a pair of Samson C02's for overhead
a Sure SM 57 for snare
and a PG series kick mic (large diaphragm dynamic)
you can always add tom mics later, oh check out MXL's small diaphragm condensors aswell, they're gettin' a pretty good rep.

Mar 21, 2006 02:14 pm I agree with WYD on this one, that you could put together a pack for not so much cash that'd perform better since you can design it specifically for yourself.
I've used MXL 993 stereo pair on percussion and I have to say that they exceeded my expectations for a $150 pair of mics. They have a good high end, but a little muddy in the hi-mids just like my MXL 990 is...it must run in the family.
I've used the CAD kick mic from their set and it was pretty much unacceptable for a kick mic. I wrestled with that kick and still haven't achieved a good sound with that track. Of course it could have been the engineer's fault as well since it was my first (and still only) kick to record.
