this is completely unrelated to recording and not even my PC... but I was working on a PC belong to one of my moms friends... doing data recorvery and driver install... basically fixing everything the store losers did when they screwed up a system restore and charged her $250 for it...

I was all set to go and install drivers for the printer but then the two CDROMs stopped detecting disks... I remember someone else had this problem too but I can't find it.

The drives are detected and reporting as working correctly but when a disk is inserted no joy... same thing is happening to the floppy too... but nobody cares about floppies :)

I "think" a regestry entry needed to be deleted but I can't find any information even with google...

zeck,

first try to check whether the cdrom will boot from recovery cd... (go the the bios and change boot disk priorities to cdrom). insert the cd and restart..-carefull not to reinstall windows!!

If it will boot from there means that it's a windows system problem but if not means the cdrom driver is corrupted. - may need to uninstall the driver, then restart- this will make windows auto install the new driver for the cdrom..

try it out!!

cheers!

zek, your right. I know dB had the same problem, as did I and didnt know it was related. I looked a bit for the thread, but cant determine how to search for it. I thought it was in the computer forum but I knda gave up looking for now. Maybe dB will remember what he did, or whomever found the fix.

Found it.

[quote]Windows XP has CD/DVD drives disappearing problem solved

I have seen this happen on my machines and others machines. I am unsure at this point what causes it, but I have never been able to solve it without a reinstall of Windows, which, needless to say, sucks.

Well, it just happened to my new office PC and I wasn\'t about to reinstall and didn\'t want to bring it to the store, so I did some Googling...unlike before, this time I foudn the answer.

In case this happens to anyone else, get the vbs script at www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs and run it...it will restore the drives to your Windows Explorer...

I wonder if MS has ever figured out why this even happens...

Anyway, thought I\'d sahre in case others have the problem.

ah ha... I'll give it a go tomarrow,... err later today...after I wake up....

ehh wait thats for XP... this lady is running ME... well won't break it any more I suppose :)

I am thinking it's significant regestry corruption...as I did find some thread on doing this manually and none of the keys I expected were there... like the upper and lower level filters... I broght the thing home...and I'll probably just reinstall and hurry up and patch...

just think... support for Win98 and ME ends in June...

...looking at the script again...ok I didn't delete anything in the services path...
