Advice needed for newbie/good son

Hi guys, long time forum listener, first time poster/member. Sorry if this is too long!

I'm looking to upgrade my (non-technical) father's setup. He's newly obsessed with home recording, uses Adobe Audition 1.5 on a decent PC with an average sound card (don't know the model, but its PCI, he's currently mic plugged into the 1/8 mic slot with an adapter). He is a singer who accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and some harmonica--ballads/folk/rock kind of stuff, nothing too heavy and no additional instrumentation. I want to a)upgrade his mic, b)get suitable mic levels into the soundcard (will upgrade it later).

I should say all the info on this board is great, but its also voluminous and I'm a little turned around. I'm looking to spend b/n $100-200 for these 2 devices, and below is a list of what I've found so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm confronted by far too many options here, let alone everything I'm leaving off. Prices mainly ebay.
Mics:
Samson C01 (~$69)
Behringer B1 (~$89)
MXL 990/909/V63M (~$49-99)
Preamps/Mixers: (I really don't know which kind he needs)
Audiobuddy Preamp (~$86)
Samson Mic Tube Preamp (~$89)
Behringer UB502 Mixer (~$34)

Gah! Thanks for any guidance.

Hey there, and welcome to HRC. Well a few of the folks around here have given the Behringer B-1 a lot of praise. I'm sure a few will pop in and give their opinion as well, but of your choices there and for the money that is a great mic for the purpose you stated. As well I might add that the Behringer mixer the UB502 would be a great choice as well. For a few dollars more you might want to step up to the UB802 though. I have used Behringer desks as well as their smaller mixers for years with great results. As well as a lot of their other gear. It is very durable and dependable. And for the money it is a great value for the price.

A dedicated pre amp is nice, but he may get more use out of the little mixer in the long run if he ever needs to use say 2 mics at once. So honestly that might be the better choice in your situation.

those look like store prices :0

Rode NT1a's are at a $200 "buy it now" ... I think I paid $250 for the "origional" 3 years ago... so they might show up cheaper... also don't forget to check your local Music Go 'Round (if available) as being that it's after christmas everyones swapping out their old stuff that just got upgraded... so they have a lot of excess inventory (atleast here in ohio) and can probably be hagled down a few bucks.

He wants to stay under $200.00 for the set up complete.
