FX connected through S/PDIF

hello all.. I recently purchased a Lexicon reverb and I'm trying to hook it up through the S/PDIF on my M-Audio 24/96. Apparently the soundcard needs to have the master clock set externally when I want to record with S/PDIF. The probelm that I'm having is that the reverb is showing an error. I'm not sure if the reverb can set the master clock.. I'm totally clueless about this stuff and would really appreciate any info someone could provide me... thanks in advance

one thing that works is plugging my cd player into the reverb and then into my soundcard. But when I try to make an fx loop with the reverb and soundcard, I get errors.

Just curious, which model Lexicon do you have? I dont know if any of them have an internal clock, other then maybe their absolute top end model's.

First of all:
www.lexiconpro.com/downlo..._Guide_Rev1.pdf

"Digital Audio
S/PDIF (CP-340 Type II) Consumer Digital Audio I/O. 75Ω coaxial cable suited for digital audio or video signals is required. Audio grade cable is not suitable."

from the owner's manual. So make sure you've got good S/PDIF cables. Also:

"Selecting a Digital Input Source
1. Press Control.
2. Press Up or Down until the left-most digit in the lower lefthand corner of the display is 0.
3. Turn SELECT to 0.0 Word Clock, and turn ADJUST to display Ext: XLR or Ext: Coax, depending on the input you are using.

Setting Input Levels
1. Press Control.
2. Press Up or Down until the left-most digit in the lower lefthand corner of the display is 0.
3. Turn SELECT to 0.0 Audio Input Source.
4. Turn ADJUST to select Analog: 48kHz or Analog: 44.1kHz.
5. Adjust the front panel INPUT knob so that program material level peaks cause the headroom display to reach the top of the column without lighting the overload indicators. An occasional large signal peak causing momentary flashing of the overload indicator is acceptable in most instances, but should be validated by listening to the actual result.
6. Turn ADJUST to select Dig:. The display will show any valid digital format which is properly connected to the PCM 91 rear panel digital input."

It's a 170 page owner's manual, and is rather confusing to an old analog person such as myself... But, at first glance, it looks like the PCM91 relies upon your 2496 for clock (or whatever digital device is hooked-up). I do not see reference to "sync" or "clock" in their instructions. So keep your 2496 on internal clock, set the PCM91 to either 44.1 or 48 kHz, depending on your project... the wrong setting there would generate error messages...

As long as the 2496 is set to internal clock it should send the clock out to any device connected via the s/pdif connection.

hey guys, thanks for the suggestions. First of all I do have the proper cables. Second, I have read the manuals inside and out, and have tried every possible confiuration. On the Lexicon you have the option of selecting either AES or S/PDIF for the digital inputs. There are no other options to select in regards to the dig inputs. So I select EXT - Coax, which would be the S/PDIF that I have connected. Now I have also left the soundcard to act as the master clock. I can see input coming into the Lexi, but theres nothing coming out. Is it possible that the soundcard cant do S/PDIF in/out at the same time????? Basically I'm trying to make an fx loop with the S/PDIF

Just a thought, is there an output level not getting set for the Lexicon. I am not sure if it is possible to have both input and output working on the s/pdif of the 2496 at the same time. But I dont see why it wouldn't, that would be kind of silly to not allow it.

Have you checked the help section of the 2496, or manual to see if there are any limitation's? The next step is getting in touch with M-Audio support and finding out there.

theres no output setting that I know of.. the Lexi works fine when I plug my cd players S/PDIF into it.

this seems like such a straight forward process... is it common for people to use S/PDIF as an fx loop???

I cant honestly say for some other's but I know none of the other studio's I go into use it that way. If I am patching outboard FX I always either run through them into the board, or patch them through inserts or aux busses.
