looking to purchase some solid monitors, nothing super pro but maybe an industry standard for home recording. dont even know where to start. Want something that if isnt perfect i can at least get familiar enough with them to compensate for their weaknesses.
thanks

Monitors are a very personal choice. Really, the best thing you can do is go to a couple local stores and listen to a bunch of them and choose the ones you like best...nobody can really say "these are best" or "those are best"...I would suggest looking at nearfields that are front ported or have no port. Don't go for the subwoofer set, just get two good speakers. Subwoofer can tend to make the sound bass heavy unless you set them up right and rear-ported speakers need to sit out from the wall a few feet, and most home studios are a desk up against the wall, so setting them out is not practical.

Like Dan said, it's a matter of preference.

The whole point of the exercise is to "learn" your monitors and how a mix translates to other systems. So when you decide, listen to some familiar songs on your monitors and then your car, your home stereo and (if you are like me)that crappy boom-box you have at work.

Try not to place them too close to a wall or in a corner and maybe opposite some diffusing or absorbing surfaces (like a bookshelf or a couch).

P.S. for the money I am really diggin' my bi-amped matched pair of behringer 2031A monitors.

not the brightest spark...

Mate.

I've got Event Active, front ported, bi-amped, nearlfield TR5's. £260 for the pair. I'm very pleased with them.

I was looking to buy my first pair and thought I'd spend a bit extra rather than grow out of a cheaper pair in a year or two.

I've heard mixed reports from Behringer, though I know alot of audiophiles unfairly look down on the company. They make some great gear.

The TR5's have had excellent reviews and whilst the others know alot more than me on the subject of monitors these are really nice.

Paul White from Sound on Sound liked them alot and the Neptunes supposedly use them.

Just my experience. When I played 'back in black' on them I wept like a child. It was like some form of spiritual enlightenment....man!
