need acoustic strings opinions

Hey- I've been using Daddario phospher bronze acoustic strings for some time, but my Martin is begging for something else (for finger picking). Bright strings are great for strumming, but that brightness transforms into finger and string noise during quieter picking. I've got Martin phospher bronze on now- much better(haven't broken in yet) I read a review in Electronic Musician about different types of ghs strings for a softer sound without getting a dull or even dead sound. Any opinionated finger pickers? Thanx. mwaynew

I've got elixirs on my taylor 12 string. I'm very happy with them. I do a fair amount of hack-finger picking, and don't notice any undue fret or finger noise.

I've used elixers. I had string breakage in two consecutive sets and got scared away. (fluke maybe?) Three endorsements- all Elixer. Hmmm

Thanx guys

mate.

I have a lakewood d1 dreadnought all solid. its a great guitar and is a bit more bassy than some of the £6-900 martin dreads i've tried. I'm not sure what model you have but on my dreadnought i found the following...

I used daddario's for a while then discovered martin sp phospor bronze 12 guage. the sp range is amazing. not to bright and they last for ages. if you live in the u.k check out www.stringbusters.com for really cheap strings and delivery.

Have to toss my hat into Elixir's ring also. I use them on everything. They really kill the string noise from fingers and they last forEVER! I've had a set on my acoustic for like 6 months. They look a lil shabby, but still sound and play great. As for string breakage, I use them on 3 electrics and 1 acoustic with no problems. The only time I've had them break on me was when I had a worn string saddle with a jagged string seat.

For a Martin (I have a D-35) the "discovered martin sp phospor bronze" statement from Flashman is true. For me, simply amazing. I fingerpick, fingertips, no picks. Depending on your guitar, you may have to wait a few days for them to settle-in. The 3rd string may be too bright before that. But seriously, its a matter of personal taste. I've tried all the ones mentioned above and then some, and like them all. I just happen to like the SP ones best. The "plain" SP are also very good.

Bleak, they make a Blue Steel acoustic set ??? I love 'em for the electrics !... Pretty cool the way they're made !

Man, I really didn't like those Elixers, though... 'can't believe so many do . They just seemed dull to me, with that coating on them .

My Martin is the D-16RGT (middle of the road, 1,600.00) I guess I'm looking for that familiar, professional Martin sound. As I noted before, so far, the Martin SP's have sounded the best. Thanx. mwaynew

Mike and others,

Based on the way you lot raved about them I've just restrung my d1 with elixir phosphor bronze nanoweb 12's. I'm easily indluenced. They replaced my martin sp phsoshor bronze 12's.

I have to say that they are not nearly as responsive when they're fresh as the martin's. they are very balanced and smooth but they don't pick up ther nuances of my guitar's character nearly as well as the martin's.

I can imagin they'd be an excellent choice for music where string noise is an issue and where the acoustic is only in a supporting rythm role and is back in the mix. I'm having to use quite a hard pick to get any attack off them.

I've yet to record with them but I have a feeling that the upfront folk sound that I want might be lacking.

I was using Elixirs but I found them to be a little too slippery for my liking. I thought they sounded fine but since I wasn't use to them my slides always seem to miss the mark. Now I use D'Ardario Phospher Bronze. They're cheap and they sound just as good to me but that's not saying much :)

I think it depends on the guitar, some gits sound better with the highs accentuated, some don't. Some sound better with boomy-er strings, some don't. I had a '63 j50 that sounded phenomenal with new strings, because they we're bright. After a few weeks, the shizzle wore off, and it sounded dull.

An epiphone i've played is the opposite, very bright and edgy with new strings, but when they broke in and lost they're sharpness, the guitar was very balanced and nice sounding. I think my J45 is the same, but it's too soon to tell.

They both used d'addario phosphur bronze.
