If all u are recording is an electric guitar, a line out from your amp to the line in to your recording system may get u what u want. Shure SM 57 ( a dynamic mic) is often recommended for miking the amp. It is good for vocals too. MXL makes an inexpensive pair of condenser mics (990 large diaphragm and a small diaphragm that I cant remember. The 990 I have works good, but that may not always be the case. Inexpensive means lack of quality control. Others on this site will offer some good ideas too.

I'd have to go with sound mind. If this is your first mic, go with an sm 57. Its a great starting point and will serve you well for years. I tend to dislike condensers by them selves on a guitar cab as sometimes it sounds a bit harsh. But doubling a nice condenser with a mic like an sm57 will give quite a ph - fat sound.

However, I do like a nice tube condenser on a cab. A couple that spring to mind are the Rode NTK and K2. These will hold their own without a dynamic IMO.

Rode NTK service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Rode K2

Some other large diaphragm condensers that I would recommend are:

Audio Technica 4050

Rode NT1A
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

AKG C3000
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Neumann TLM 103

PS. dB, how do you do those "servicebfast" links from HRC?

I made yours the affiliate links...I have a way to automate them building affiliate URL's, but it doesn't work with some pages...which is a total drag.

Since were up to the $1000 US price range, the AKG C414 comes to mind for miking amps. I think these go a liitle beyond "inexpensive" though. When you go beyond the MXLs and other $100 mics, now you're getting serious and will need to consider more expensive preamps, AD converters, software, etc. For basic stuff and a limited budget, I thk the SM57 is the obvious choice.
