well i am using the edge of the rule and placing it on the frets, its almost the lenght of the whole fret board...and i just look to see if there is any space in between or hump in the middle......is this a good practise? cause i rather this way than using the filler gauges...much easier....altho i never seen this way taught online or anything.maybe if its good, i invented a new way lol....thanks

Here's how I do it:
Fret the first and thirteenth frets, and look at the gap between the frets and the string all along the neck, it should be relatively even (as dB-Wan noted, use your eyes....and ears). Another trick is to fret the 12th, and stick a pick between the frets and the string. If the pick falls out, it's too high (assuming you don't use mammoth-sized picks, or play with very high action). If it frets out (buzzes), there's more work ahead.

Using a rule is all very well and good in the construction phase, or in a refretting, but your eyes are your best friends in an adjustment.
The rule should give you a good idea where the "bump" is, but there's usually more to it than just getting the bump out. You're checking your intonation after the adjustment, right?

what i do is put a capo on the first fret and fret the 13th fret @ the same time and check the gap @ the 5th fret..

Exactly, XTC. (BTW: Just got - Okay, so I'm behind the curve - "Apple Venus Volume 2...NICE!)

Of course, sighting down the neck from the bridge to the nut will show immediately if you have a serious wobble.
