Alright, so I think i'm going to go with the m-audio 1010 (not LT), and it has 10 ins and 10 outs. How can i use my mixer with this? I have a behringer sl2442fx pro and i want to be able to use every channel with my mixer. Can i use the Insert I/O to connect to the m-audio interface? if not, what can i do? :) help me!

First, be aware that of those 10 ins, only 8 are analog, 2 are S/PDIF digital inputs, just so you know.

Of those eight, if you have direct outs on each channel (not sure if that model does) then run channel one's direct out to number 1 input on the 1010, channel 2 to output to input 2, etc...

yeah, it doesn't have direct out's though. I have subgroups and aux sends and main outs. but i want to be able to separate each channel.

Oh, then use the sub outs to go to input 1-4 of your 1010...you can then use up to four separate inputs, the aux sends can act as 2 additional subgroups as well.

If there are a couple signals that wouldn't have to go thru the mixer, such as outboard preamps or direct boxes or something you could.

channel inserts will work fine. I ran standard like that. yamaha mg16/4 channel inserts -> 1010lt.

Using the mixer inserts will work, but you need to buy or make the right kind of connectors. Mixer inserts send the mixer channel out via the tip on a TRS connector and return the signal to the mixer via the ring. To use the insert as a send to the 1010, you should cut the wire to the ring on the end connecting to the 1010. On the mixer end, cut the ring lead and connect it to the tip so that the signal is returned to the mixer for monitoring the input to the 1010 via the mixer outputs. The disadvantage of this is that the 1010 no longer has balanced inputs which can introduce noise to the signal path, especially on long cables. For a diagram of this go to the Presonus web site and download the manual for the digimax LT. They recommend this to use the inserts on the digimax as sends to a mixer, etc. Just connecting a cable from the mixer insert to the 1010 input may not work too well. BTW, the 1010 is awsome for the price!

I respectfully disagree. Although, I do agree that the signal between the mixer and 1010 box will not be balanced, usually this is less than 6 feet, and not by any interference. In this case, you'll not have any difference between balanced and unbalanced. Balanced removes introduced noise from that cable only. If there's not any noise being added into a cable from external sources, then unbalanced will sound the same as balanced. No extra noise.

Balanced does increase the signal on long runs though, so that can be kept in mind as well.

I've used a 8 ft hosa snake 1/4" mono on one end, and RCA jack on the other end for my 1010lt. It worked without problem. In the case of the 1010 breakout box, you'd need a 1/4" mono to 1/4" mono patch cable. No problem, MF sells them all the time.

Although, admittedly, I've not used the 1010 w/ breakout box, I've used inserts from my mixer with 1/4" mono, and if signal comes out the insert, through the patch cable for me, then it should for anyone. Just don't put the 1/4" jack in all the way (on the mixer insert), only to the first click. If it's all the way, then the signal chain gets broken, and the mixer wants to get the signal back from the receive part of the insert.
