i was wondering if anyone on here has had the chance to use the MXL 603's as overheads...or the MXL V67 as an overhead? im looking into picking up new overheads...and i quite drop the cash for the SM81's ive been wanting...i will have the money for them in about 3 months...but for now i need something to hold me over that can also be useful down the road...and i heard alot of good things about these mics however i cannot test these before i purchase them because there is simply nowhere around here to do so...

so if anyone has tried either of these microphones id love to hear your 2 cents...

also...have any of you heard of KEL Audio microphones? i just heard about them and they look promising...so just GOOGLE KEL AUDIO and check them out...there are sound samples on the page...they are budget priced condenser microphones...check them out...

Octava mc-012's make great overheads. You can probably pick a pair up used on ebay for about 150.

I have a pair of MXL 993 SDCs, but not the 603s. I can say that the 993s are a total steal at $150 a pair. They sound great for budget mics.

I know that Oktava mics can be great if you get the genuine deal and not the cheap Chinese fakes...just be careful on those. If the price is too good to be true, then it is!

ive been looking for the octava's on there...but they are all like....400 bucks for a pair...harvey gerst tells me that the 603's sound just like the mk-012's...and ive heard sound clips and i liked it too...sounded really nice...but i havent heard clips of the V67 yet....so i dont want to sell myself short

I've heard recordings with the 603s, they're okay, i'd put the 012s slightly ahead of them in terms of preference, the 603s have just a little more harshness to the top end, but just a pinch.

I think Geoff might own one, but I might be mistaken. He's got one of those V... MXLs.

yeah i do have a few of the V MXL's . I just got the V69 (i think that's the #, it's late) and i'm very happy with all the MXL mic's i've bought. I've used the V67 for vocal and acoustic guitar but not for over heads, I don't think that it would be a problem but i tend to use the small diaphram condensors for that.

awesome...i appreciate the help...but ive used large diaphragms as overheads before and for some reason dont think ill ever go back to small diaphragm condensers again...it just sounds...more full? i cant really describe it...it just hit a button with me...

cool man. That's it right tere, what ever works for you getting the sound "you" want. Go ahead and try the v67 , it's not as crisp as some but has a nice vintage color to it (at least for vocals) .

I have the MXL 603's and I simply LOVE IT. It does the trick for many purposes, including overheads. I have been using them mostly to record acoustic guitars, but I believe this mic has the best value around. If you r planning to aquire one cheap but great mic go for the 603S.

I have a V67g and use it for vocals and acoustic guitar. It sounds great! My only complaint is, I wish it had a lowcut switch, or something to roll off the low end. Lucky for me, my tube mic pre has a lowcut switch! But overall, I'd say that for $100, it's awesome!

For anyone still interested in finding some low priced overhead mics that will compare or beat the 012 in quality. Tkae a look a the Samson C02's. They can be purchased in a pair for about $120.00. A friend of mine who owns several Music Go Round stores turned me onto them when I was in need a good pair quickly and I dont regret it at all. Excelant bang for the buck.
